Should I make a new system from scratch or use an existing one?

New system, I can wait a bit more.

I'm all for innovation.

You could copy an existing one which would function and not take very long to get going...

Or you could make memories...

Whatever you choose to do, I'm sure ultimately will be appreciated by all in one way or another and the universe seeded accordingly.
Yeah, sure. Right. Whatever.

Should that recent study be taken into consideration in the new design :P

QuoteInternet users make up their minds about the quality of a website in the blink of an eye, a study shows. Researchers found that the brain makes decisions in just a 20th of a second of viewing a webpage.

I want to mention this goes along the lines of graphic design in general. Graphic design/website design is far more detailed behind the scenes than meets the eye. It must carry a message that is deciphered within a split second. As we become more and more familiar of these constant presences in our lives, that time frame gets even tighter.

Making a quality site MUST institute careful planning and foresight, rather than just look spiffy, it MUST carry a aimed message or you run the wide odds of loosing your audience/membership.

This is Graphic Design 101. Most programmers think themselves to be quite graphic savvy, simply because they know a few tricks in photoshop. Yet they usually make a common mistake by designing on principles of their own preference, and take no account for the preference of their demographic. This may be based on inexperience.
Yeah, sure. Right. Whatever.

@aleksantari...
Of course you havn't seen the awesome forum. Its still a covert project.

@LPChip

Are you going to make your own, or would you like to use the forum sys I've been seeing?

That really depends on what the forum is offering, and if its easy to get it integrated in the system i'm building.

Cool. I'll pass that on.
BTW... Tha guy making the forums also uses MPT, although none of his work is on tha internet. He making a musical score for a mod I'm making on a freeware game. =D

It's nice to see that the site is still developed. Respect to lrpchip and all you guys who contribute. :)

djnonsens

Hi all,

My name is Gerhard, aka djnonsens. A couple of years ago I ran a website named eXploitation. Maybe you have heard of it; it was rather populair in those days.

The website was created for tracker producers. People could join the site, upload their music and review that music. Somewhat simular to the ModPlug website, but way better (in my homble opinion). eXploitation had a lot of potential, at some point I had to disallow new members from signing up and set a maximum of 4 tracks that could be downloaded per day, because of bandwidth issues. I had 60 GB per month, and was looking for new sponsors in order to let the website grow.

At some point I made some major decisions in my life, and I decided to stop developing eXploitation and close the project for good. However, I still got the code, and I have a heart for the tracker scene (or what is left of it, anyway).

The website is build in classic ASP, and I used Interbase as the main database. It had some nice features such as upload with statusbar, and some online management possibilities. People could browse and search and order tracks (by software or format for example), read reviews and rate tracks (average rating), there was a guestbook, member profiles, etc, etc

As stated the old site isn't online anymore, but here is the idea:
http://web.archive.org/web/20031226133826/http://www.exploitation.nl/
(refresh a couple of times to get the best results)

If interested, and used for a community site such as ModPlug, you may have the sourcecode. The site was (in those days) amazingly fast, and all worked very well. It was a little addicting to the members, don't ask me why. However, I was still a novice programmer. The code is easy to read but it is "spaghetti-code" and not very well documented. I used a lot of functions over and over again, instead of some some smart classes or something. If I would redo the site; I would completely code it from scratch, in ASP.NET ofcourse.

I will check in a couple of days for response, if any. I don't use the hotmail address I registered with, and I am proud that my current e-mail address didn't get any spam in the last couple of years (and I would like to keep it that was ;) )
The best sites to compare eXploitation with:

Trax In Space (if you remember) or
CuteTranceGirls (http://www.ctgmusic.com)
It was better then The Mod Archive or ModPlug Central ;)

LPChip

Thanks for your interest and willingness to share your sourcecode.

There are a few things that makes it hard for me to accept your offer.

The server I'm using doesn't have ASP nor interbase :( and I'm not an ASP programmer. I do know VBScript, but last time I had access to an ASP server, and tried to program something, I couldn't even get a hello world :s

Since a website needs to be maintained and have functions added from time to time, its hard for me to do that, unless you're willing to keep the development going on. (that only if we can get ASP and Interbase on the modplug server.

Aside from that, I'm still programming the new version, and i'm getting somewhere. I don't like to waste the time I've spent on that project, but if yours is really that good, and we can get it rolling, I might still considder to swap. (I am going to deploy my system on 3 sites among modplug so i will have use for it anyway.)

I do miss a good forum for the community feel (the guestbook isn't that great to use as a forum)

My first time on since the site came back up. What's new?

LPChip

I'm still programming on the site. Things are getting more complicated and some structural problems start to occour. For that reason, I'm now starting to integrate OOP structural programming to my project. This required me a bit of study to do, but it is having alot of effort already.
