Pattern Properties unavailable

Sorry if this is a really simple question, but I just can't figure it out. For some reason, I can never set the "pattern properties", because the button is grayed out. I don't know why it's grayed out!  can anyone help??

Use another format, like .it or something else than .mod since it only supports patterns with 64 lines.
