For AppleJoe - an improvisation in "pure" e phrygian - though I almost blew it by putting in the a minor chord. Much to easy too hear it all as a minor.

two versions

clean recording of Seagull steel string acoustic with Dean Markley soundhole pickup with some lexicon reverb added. The distortion is unintentional - I saturated my 4-track input by accident.

The same recording run through 4 instances of guitar rig and flanger.

Clean recording: Great sound, emphasis on the b2 and impressive playing skills. I wondered whether you tired slightly for a brief period after a four minutes or so, but then around five minutes you strike back.

Flanger: I usually prefer at least a little echo, reverb over nothing (particularly when I play myself - I tend to play without accompaniment, so a little reverb helps livening up the sound)  but in this case I'm not sure if it matters since I found the playing itself very good, so it's less of an issue. In one sense it is a little more interesting sounding, but in another it covers up, renders more unclear details that sounded impressive in the clean recording.

At any rate, very nice Phrygian music. Do you happen to know a few Phrygian guitar solos by any artist that it could be worth checking?

not sure if this is phrygian or lydian right now.

been quite a few years since I played it. nonetheless I believe it is modal and it is famous.

and thanks for the listen and comment!

You've inspired me to try each mode - we'll see if I do it.

Good luck with the Locrian. I tried to make sense of it a few years ago. Tricky, but I think it's not to be rejected completely. It's a nice challenge, and if a firm beat is established first, it's workable. It's a while since I tried, so I guess I should have a look.

EDIT: Don't Fear The Reaper: I recognize the song, but I've never been conscious about it. Unexpected solo outburst. Sounded more Phrygian than Lydian, but I can't tell whether he used both regular Phrygian and Phrygian Dominant. Nice, no matter what. I must listen to the studio version too.

Harbinger

Notes as i'm listening:

Reminiscent of Yes's album candy, where nice little solo or acoustic pieces would transition between meatier songs, this song makes for background music for thoughtless activity, like cleaning the dishes or entering fields of data into a spreadsheet. But don't try to put it in the background if you're trying to analyze the data, solve problems, or... i don't know ... write a review on someone's song -- the acoustic nature of the wandering musical ideas in the guitar playing is slightly too interesting to completely ignore.

I'll keep this in my Quiet Music rotation.
