txt file export and import feature needed

hi!
i didn't tested yet the last version of the open-modplugtracker, but:

a very useful feature from VortexTracker is very welcome on the so useful ModPlugTracker is the possibility of export/import all the tune to and from a text file, which we could previously or lately edit on a simple text editor, copy tune parts from a forum, work over a text generated from our code script (people which like to code in ansi-basic, perl, python, etc.) etc.

good examples can illustrate the awesome flexibility provided from a text-based format are formats like .xpm (pictures) - .svg, .eps and .ai (vectorial) - .xml (this one says everything)

of course the text format doesn't needs to be exactly xml - text format simply is enough, just like provided from Vortex Tracker....

Let me first enlighten that its not possible to get the samples in the textfile. I believe that Vortex Tracker doesn't use samples, but settings in order to get sound. Settings can be stored easilly, but how do you store a sample of 1 MB into a textfile? Storing as binairy data would simply mean a huge textfile of 1 MB for just one sample. Now, okay, that could be possible somehow, but what about posting something like that on a forum? No way they are going to allow such huge posts due to the limits of storage on the database server.

As far as patterns go, you can select all in a pattern, copy, and paste to a textfile manually. Its not the ideal export, I know, but it'll get you there.

He's got a point thoe. I've long been considering making scripts to manipulate tracker data, however the only answer I actually got from the devolopers was "go make a tracker format reader yourself" and I immediately lost my enthusiasm, for then I might as well start coding this dissasembler I've always wanted to make.

Anyway, it would be nice to have a kind of import export that put the samples / instruments in their files (.xi or something) and ALL the pattern data in some kind of script-edible format.

Would still be a nice feature.

Import/Export for patterns is a nice thing which even I'd like to see. Its handy to get a whole song appended to another or restore from another song if you messed up samples in that song and have them right in another song (or you tweaked samples/vst settings in this song and now want all of them to sound like this...)

wrong, at least theorically: what about hexdumps or uuencodes? both tecniques are excellent to store binary information, like samples, in a text format - of course the resulting files can be a third larger (uuencode) or double larger (hexdump) - it seems to be not a problem at all...

But, interesting as well would be if you can have the choice of including them too, or just the patterns for a fast edition out of the tracker, which you can combine the exported samples or whatever - what do you all think?

btw, months (or years) ago i started to code on wxbasic (.sf.net) a converter from .mod (4 channels, the default old Amiga format) to text and back - and i confess were boring coding that, as well converting and converting back to text the tunes all the time (jesus, really painful....) , when a tracker, in my oppinion, should have this feature by default (in my oppinion, would be the very first format used, since as well it's much more close to coders (even trackers coders) to debug the tracker errors or other feature lacks, i think...) - it's extremelly fast and handy to see what is in a tune document if it is a text format...

You'd be the first and probably the only one that wants sample data in a textfile. If you want to share your module, just do it in the module which is optimised and can be opened just like that.

I don't say that its not possible in a textfile, but the problem with this is that you'll end up with a huge textfile that is as much of value than the module itself. You can't share your module over a forum anyway, due to the filesize. A chiptune would be the only way to do so, but still would cloud the forum unless you'd attach it as .txt file. If you do so, you'd better do it as module instead. Everyone can load it in and play it, and they don't even require a tracker for it.

Just pattern data is a different story, as that is usefull, but to do an entire song is kind of useless.

i don't know if i'm the only one, but i edit modules around 10 times faster on a text editor... (hugelly much more flexible for modules - samples is another story...)

btw, the feature of at least being able to import/export to VortexTracker (with data lost, i don't mind...) would be great as well
