From another thread:

This made me curious that how stable modplug seems for different people - so plain and simple poll here: How often (O)MPT crashes in action? Also comments about the version used and causes might be interesting to hear. For me, from past year or so in actual tracking/playing in 'beta' versions, I can remember one fuzzy VST related hang, and an ITP-loading bug(fixed) so hard to get more stable (or maybe I just have forgetten a few of them :)).

I can't remember any crash with (O)MPT. Using now P3-1.17.02.45 on a W2K machine, and the generic one on a W98 laptop.
I have to add, that I, so far, haven't used VST-plugins ..

So far, OMPT did not crash again - but i am still testing... :D but this period when i started to use ASIO was the only time i ever had trouble with MPT.

OpenMPT is very stable here, and those moments that it crashes, they usually are because something else crashes a chain reaction kind of crash happens. But even those are sparse.

I've had my fair share of crashes with mpt, also with the latest build.
It seems some plugs just don't seem to wanna work with either mpt or with each other, but it's not a real problem because i tend to replace the plugs that cause the crashes for ones that don't. (except for bitcrushers,i haven't found one that doesn't crash or screws up mpt)
I guess when you try out as much plugs as you can you're bound to run in to crashes once in a while.

OMPT is very stable here. My crashes are all caused by  overloading my celeron with vst and vsti plugs. oops....

modplug almost never crashes for me when i'm using tried and tested plugins, if i'm trying out new ones it will occasionally crash but usually with old plugins that crash some other programs too.
i have had a problem recently with certain combinations of tracks open leading to me pressing play and the audio clicking once then going silent. it's fairly rare and annoyingly doesn't happen quite often enough for me to be easily able to work out what tracks/plugins are responsible. as far as i can tell its when i have 2 or 3 tracks open and am swapping between them. modplug has to be closed then restarted to fix it so it's almost like a crash except that you can save first!

when running under Vista, the current stable(?) mpt will crash 8 times out of 10 when I load the guitar rig 2 plugin. This didn't happen in XP, though it may be more a Guitar rig2 issue with vista more than an mpt problem :P
Still, it's made me start saving my work more often!

On my computer, OpenMPT crashes often when I have had many modules open at the same time. When I close them all, it crashes. I therefore try to always have one module loaded.

Crashes only really occur with plug-ins.  Generally, older effects (e.g., Kjaerhus Classic series) work fine, and non-Synth Edit VSTis work fine (Iblit, Polyiblit).  Any VSTi that requires more than one file frequently has a problem running more than one instance.  (For example GTG Synths NK1001 is a great free monophonic synth.  But if I run more than one instance, I don't hear the output of the second instance, and MPT has crashed on occasion.  NK 1001 requires both the .dll file and a .dat file.  Other synths that use files like this seem to have the same problem.)

Anyway, for using samples, MPT is hard to beat.  No real problems there.

Out of efficiency principles I never have multiple modules opened at the same time, but I wonder about this crash when closing them all.
Do you have any indication about the number of opened files ? A kind of threshold when the crash will happen or not ?

I have had some crashes, but I'm reasonably sure that they all have been caused by VSTs, not by MPT.

Apart from OMPT's incompatibility with wine, it's pretty stable.

oh, i just had this bug again: modplug suddely "slows" down, and it slows down the whole system. the mouse cursor moves very jumpy and everything else also very slow. i was able to click on the save button (what a luck!) and press the stop button. a sec after, modplug crashed with this nice windows message "program must be closed"...

I now noticed that it crashed after having multiple modules open, then modifying one, and when I closed the modified module, MPT crashed. Happens only when four or more modules are open at same time.

I also noticed that when I open the fourth module, it automatically places the * next to the module's name on top of the screen (indicating it is modified). Don't know why it does that.
