1. An objective like a competition, a movie, a game etc...
2. New instruments
3. No explanation, ie: something just pops into my head out of the blue.

It was very difficult thinking of 3 things. For me the composing process generally occurs with a little inspiration and a lot of effort. But its really great when you can compose solely out of inspiration. I've had "writers block" on one occasion where I couldn't compose for over a year.

Me too, almost a year. Nowadays I need to dedicate time weekly for composing, its like obsession... but I don´t complain, better this way around :).
