Importing sf2 into Modplug

I want to jazz up some old tracker stuff I've done as it's done using samples that can sound pretty harsh in the high end.

I went to import a saxophone instrument on top of an existing one. It was horrendously out of tune! It was also very difficult to get it to sound in tune at all. I could only change the root note in the Instrument section. I would have had to tune every sample... that could be a real nightmare.

The actual distances between the notes are all wrong.

Is there a more convenient way to do this? I don't understand why modplug has such trouble with sf2s.

I've used a Soundfont player before, but that was just for piano. If I need to do pitch shift/vibrato, that doesn't seem to figure into it. Will this ever be implemented?

I tried the latest version of OpenMPT and it solved this problem by not letting me drag in sf2s at all. This is nuts. I can't figure out how to get vsts working anymore either.

unfortunately, mpt's soundfont support is rather limited, if you import a soundfont that has multiple layers (most decent ones do), it wont work right.
there's really not much way to improve this until multi-layer instruments are added into mpt, and thats a long ways off.

for now tho, your best bet is to use a vsti that can load soundfonts, sfz works very well for this, but its not quite as flexible as using samples.... your other option is to load the soundfont into vienna, export the samples, and remake it into a tracker-based instrument...

sfz+ can be found at http://www.store.cakewalk.com/b2cus/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=35-CWSZ1.40-20E
or you can use the simpler, but still full featured sfz, http://www.cakewalk.com/support/project5/sfz.aspx
both are free

as for how to use vsts, id suggest getting the openmpt offline manual: http://forum.openmpt.org/index.php?topic=4067.0
and looking at chapter 13, im sure it explains it better than i could.

Then I can't use pitch bend and vibrato at all. I've tried this already. I had a track where I wanted to replace the main lead which was a crappy bagpipe sample to a nice tenor sax soundfont. Unfortunately it bends constantly.

I hate this because I put a lot of effort into some of my modules and now there's nothing I can do to sex them up.

w00t!!!

sfz+ is currently a free download! Not sure if it remains that way, or is only temporary because they've put it under seasonal gift.

Its still better than the normal sfz that they don't update anymore. I hope some fixes are in the + edition that I now have...
