why does the surround option auto adjust the initial pan to center? surround is all about panning in left and right directions so why must it be center for that channel option to be active? it defeats the purpose of surround sound if you ask me!

That's because this is how Impulse Tracker implemented Surround - In Impulse Tracker, you either have full pan control in the two front channels, or the signal will be placed at the center of the rear channels ("Center Surround"). That's what the "Surround" option does and is a limitation of how the "Dolby Pro Logic Surround" standard works. ModPlug Tracker later added its own "Quad Surround" mode (to be enabled using the pattern command S9D), which also lets you pan in the rear channels - More about that can be found in the Effect Reference.

the effect reference says S9B, not S9D!
