VSTHost - Small VST host which supports loading/saving of FXP presets and FXB banks, VST chaining, MIDI input/output, MIDI player, wave player/recorder, ASIO and input from the PC keyboard.

This one is really worth checking out.  It doesn't have a built-in sequencer, but for quickly previewing VST instruments and possibly for live sets it's excellent.

haha, i think most people here know about VSTHost, not only because ModPlug uses some portions of its source code :D

I believe that the source code for one of the older versions was used as an example to implement MPT's VST support, but I'm not sure how much code was directly copied.  Besides, that was a much older version and the program has improved significantly since then.  Also, I suspect many of the newer users might not have been aware of the program.

Probably the best freeware icon editor out there.

Just have tested it quite briefly, but I have a tip for a free wav editor :
http://www.wavosaur.com
It's small (500 Kb), it can handle VST's, ASIO, and multi-channel formats, with lots of tools and effects.

Msub - Powerful search and replace command line utility.  Supports regular expressions.

Took me quite some time to find something like this.  Similar to sed,
http://www.pement.org/sed/
but all of the Windows ports of sed which I've tried have displayed some buggy behavior.  Mostly related to end of line formatting and in-place editing of files.  I recommend the UnxUtils GNU sed v4.0.7 build since it at least does not have the in-place editing bug.  Just remember to use the --text switch since by default this version works in binary mode.

PlainEdit - My latest favorite text editor.

Check out the software I am writing for myself (and for everybody interested). It is already functional enough to be useful.

Tape Loops - each instance of the application can load a wave file and either loop it or play it once. By starting several tape loops you can create a musical composition.

This tool is pretty good at finding files on your computer fast:

Everything

+ fast (indexes in seconds and searches instantly)
+ pretty small application

- search on file name only (which is why it's so fast)

If find the name of this topic a bit confusing, btw. I see that a lot software here is neither open source nor free software (which is not the same as freeware).

In the real world, outside of GNU, free software usually means freeware (free as in beer).

However, I propose a mod changes the topic title to "Recommendations of software yo don't have to pay to use" to avoid confusing Jojo ;-)
