Note to the microtuning list and xenharmonic alliance

A friend of mine (William Newbold) gave me a midi file with 7 tracks made back in 2002 or 2003. It was essentially white key music with two tempo ramp increases. What I did was set up pianoteq and GPO Aria to a 2 flat 3 sharp Lucy tuning scheme, increased the ramp velocities and note lengths, did minimal note editing and orchestrated for amplified piano (modified pianoteq grand), choir, flute, french horn, violin, and cello.

The choice of Lucy tuning was made to increase the resonance of the piano - this was done before the other instruments were added.

Enjoyed.
You know I'm not a fan of the piano, but in this way played, with this resonating sound, I like it.
At the last quarter it looses its structure a bit.

Thank you Sam.

I agree about the modified piano - it becomes a new instrument this way.

I must admit though I like playing the piano - especially the smearing of notes when the pedal is depressed. That is something fairly unique to the piano and of course harp which is a vertical piano in a way. I try to play that way on the guitar but you are limited in the number of strings and the tuning of them. (that can be modified but you lose in other ways).

Now.... ensembles offer a possibility for me since I have acquired Garritan personal orchestra - the new choir and the brass offers possibilities to my ears.

Have you heard the composer Carl Ruggles?

this is not the best piece - he has one called "Angels" (I think) that is for like 6 trumpets playing clusters and the textures are just awesome. Sun Threader piece is suppose to describe the Appalachian Mountains.

I might have an mp3 of Angels - not sure right now - been a long day traveling. I first heard Angels on a PBS documentary on modern music in... 83 or 84 - my theory class never covered anything like it in that context and I was just blown away - brass is so thick and to make clusters gives a very unique sound.

And while I'm on this role - here is one microtonalist pioneer who solved the problem of not having microtonal instruments by building his own.
