When I set a sample to loop, it doesn't play at all. How can I fix this?

Sorry I'm such a n00b

Maybe you haven't picked the loop type? I'm not sure about this. I can also recommend the Modplug WIKI, there are a lot of informations to gather, you could find it useful and maybe it's faster that forum help.

About samples, you will find an article here:

I suspect that you only enabled looping, not actually set the loop points. If they both are 0 (default) it would loop nothing and therefor not play at all.

Select all in the sample window, right click and select set as loop (or enter the values manually)
