boy, talk about a forward looking piece!

This is great for '78 home spun music

What equipment surrounds your synth recording?

How'd you get the reverse voice sample?

Very nice Sam!

Hey, I'm 50 yrs old - you?

In 78 I was in my last year of music college and interested in bringing 20th century classical harmonic ideas into metal/rock/prog rock music

I didn't have a synth then... but I had my guitar, paper and pencil

I think you are right about MUX in that the new "post modern" music is indeed different - but it is a continuation and not a departure in my mind.

Sam_Zen

I'm almost 64 as a matter of fact.
QuoteWhat equipment surrounds your synth recording?
I can't remember for sure, but I think the synthi and two stereo tape-recorders, plus, maybe for the triggering, the Randrum.
QuoteHow'd you get the reverse voice sample?
In this case I think I didn't reverse the voice, but reversed the track, add some reverb, and reversed the track again.
In those 78 days I was busy to transfer my experience with jazz-music into the electronics, involving themes and improvisation.

a nice play with harmonics! :) it's lacking high-frequencies, though. they're completely missing. maybe because of some dusty types? :D

btw, i wonder...

substracting 1 from your postcount shows that this was your 1978th post... a conincidence?

Well you certainly could have given Pink Floyd a run for their money.  Good work.

Nice you notice. It's playing with harmonics indeed. 'Natural' harmonics that is, not the twelve tone compromise.
This, because the synth has a frequency sync modulation option which can be trimmed.
I agree about missing HF's. It's just a copy from an analog tape. I will work on that.
Glad to still see you around, tvdude !

I like it though I must be honest I probably won't listen to it - too harsh for my ears.

But I like the idea anyway. I think you should think of compiling your works into one album and thus make a more serious solid release. You have a lot of fabulous works.

Also - I do not agree this is drone music.

Sam_Zen

I did compile works like this in several published albums as a matter of fact.
This is track 7 of the album 'Boven Water', published in 2002.
Right now, I'm busy to update the web-page adding free downloads of the albums at :

Follow. I had my hesitations using that term in the first place.

This is part 1 of the piece. During updating my traxlist-page for downloading I came upon part 2 on the 'Vacuum Energy' album :

ok, good, really good, mind blowing for at home in 1978 in fact!

how did you do the digeridoo?

Sam_Zen

Kind of a mind blowing to me that you refer to a didgeridoo..
This sound source is a plain Synthi oscillator, but it is sync-modulated in its frequency behaviour.
In fact this kind of modulation follows the same laws of physics like blowing loud or soft on a trumpet without valves.
To get a basic note, or an octave above.
So if one blows somewhere inbetween, one probably gets a perfect fifth, being exactly the half.
Etcetera for the other (DC) levels inside that range. Producing a perfect third, or a whole tone scale.

Another piece with this behaviour can be found on the Stracks-album :

It's astonishing that there existed such "mad" tunes already in 1978. and that almost 2 decades before terms like glitch, noise, and IDM occured to describe similar sounds. But as of now i'm not so sure if this is actually true - i don't know very much about pre 90s electronic music. I didn't even exist when this tune was made :)
Great sound

Sam_Zen

Well, in 1978 this already was a 'mad tune' as a matter of fact.
When I came up with things like this, people didn't know how to cope with it.
They had no references to compare with, to judge if it had quality or not. So comments went not further than like 'peculiar'.

To get an idea of the used elements, the German firm, that still sells this synthesizer, also offers a commercial VST version of it.
One can find the link to it, together with other data about this machine, on this page :

samball wasn't as didgeridoo for me bu still quite cool and like  cubaxd said glitched out. I liked it.

It is the anti-punk to the anti-prog rock battle of the day
