I too have nothing but praise for M-Audio.  This unit initially lasted about 8 months and then started to generate noise in the output channels, but M-Audio paid to have the unit sent back to them for repair (replacing a known faulty capacitor in the circuit that was changed in later models), and it has worked flawlessly ever since.

This unit fits perfectly on the rack in my studio and with a Behringer mixer provides for live recording as well as excellent ASIO support for MPT.

Price wise is this the best way to go

If you look around on Froogle, plenty of vendors are selling it for under $90.00.  

or would any of you folks reckon on an alternative card?

I have the M-Audio Audiophile 192.  It sounds incredible.  JR.com was having a sale; it was going for about $135.00.  I love this thing.  The only major, possibly audible difference between this and the 2496 is the balanced analog connectors on the 192; I think the 2496 just uses unbalanced ports.  It's probably not important unless you're running a patch cable halfway across the world.

Oh, yeah!  Both come with full driver support from 4Front.  I greatly enjoy using my 192 under FreeBSD.

I dont live in the States. So I included the shipping costs which is around $25.00 :cry: . Good to hear theres a thumbs up on this one. Its clear Im headed in the right direction.
