The first step is always normalizing the Bass Drum sample (or not if its loud already) and then clearing up the DC offset.

Snappy ones will suffer an lesser loss of sound quality compared to the cleaner sounding ones, due to some of the noise (pink,white?) being part of the Bass Drum sample.
And for best results, convert punchy Bass Drums. An punchy Bass Drum will have an better chance that it woudn't sound disorted after conversion.
If possible, try looping the tail of the Bass Drum (which is kinda stupid for short ones without reverb, but it can be done).
