I actually composed this piece 2 years ago. It was for a AAA First Person Shooter called Rising Eagle.

Hollywood composer Ilan Eshkeri composed the original games theme, but the company director thought that I captured the vision for the game better and this piece was to replace his. I was a little astounded when he told me who I was up against :P.

Unfortunately the game was only released for a short period as the company that made it ended up having to close down. It was during the recession and everyone was having a tough time, so it never garnered the success I was hoping for.

Nevertheless it gives an indication of my ability to compose in different styles, since this piece is pretty clearly not my usual and was made with the directors vision in mind.

I still don't quite understand why every computer game these days needs an orchestral soundtrack, but when listening to this stand-alone (without the game) it sounds pretty solid. Good job!

One of the defining aspects of older games were the tight restrictions you had to compose on. In the end this became their defining feature and a genre in itself that people loved not inspite of the restrictions, but because of them.

Now that games are a multi-million dollar industry, they aren't holding back on budgets and the size restrictions are no longer prevalent. So in effect the only comparison studios could make is Hollywood Movies. As a result, for a while now games music has been a bit stuck finding it's niche.

I agree that game music should not be like movie music, but needs to use the older approach as the foundation for it's evolution.

Thanks for listening Jojo ;).

I composed it in a sequencer. Samples are from EWQLSO Platinum, a couple from my Yamaha Motif ES8 Synth and Spectrasonics Omnisphere.

Glad you like :) Thanks for listening :)

which sequencer do you use?

I prefer Sonar but have recently bought Sibelius and I'm learning how to use it.

KrazyKatz

Cubase. I also have experience with Reaper which I highly recommend for audio mixing and editing.

But all in all I think a sequencer is a sequencer, and whilst I have no experience with it, Sonar is highly regarded sequencer too. Sibelius to my knowledge is better developed for notation.

I like the drive that you develop, but which doesn't overwhelm the rest of the piece (as it so often can!). The only thing that I'm not 100% convinced by is the choirs -- they don't quite fit into the mix as well as the rest of the instruments, and they don't seem to really go anywhere. I don't think that they really add to the piece...

I should point out, though, that that's the only criticism I can level at this piece! :) The percussion work is really, good; you've mixed them so that whilst they still overlay, there's no messy percussion drone. Nice work! :)

Edit: I like the fact that you're a "Crazy artist" -- seems kinda appropriate! :P

KrazyKatz

Heck I'm running late on a reply on this. Sorry bout that... guess I missed it.

Well, its funny you mention the good work on the percussion. My first Master had exactly that drum rumble problem, so I went back into the mix and fixed it. Guess you've suffered from that before me so I still had to learn on it :P.

As for the choir... we'll... I like it :P Put it this way, if you are really a fan of the piece, I could send you a master without it.

Cheers and thanks for the feedback as always!

@ edit: Yeup Crazy Artist is pretty cool and has already been caught by Psi...
