Here is a recent effort with Modplug.  I may try to arrange it for real string quartet over the summer.  This is the mp3 version on the modplug download page (8.5MB):

http://download.modplug.com/index.php?action=downloads&id=1618

If you're interested, you can find two .it versions on the internet.  Since the original version of the song used commercial samples, I had to replace them for the mod versions.  The first is on the .it modplug downloads page, using some mellotron-like samples that I made ( http://download.modplug.com/index.php?action=downloads&id=1619 ).  The second is a "chip" version using single cycle samples that I put up on Modarchive -- this version is only 27kb ( http://modarchive.org/view-songinfo.php?action=inst&query=2fefe0a1f6f9f153cf3e43053c52a852 ).

The piece is a little over nine minutes long, inspired to some extent by the great adagios of the late romantic era -- Mahler, Bruckner, Strauss's Metamorphosen, etc.

Anyway, if you enjoy it, let me know.

Nice study. Enjoyed it. I'm not used to classical western music, so I don't have the skill to judge the content of the composition.
But the envelope of the song is ok, with quite some tension build up until around 8:00, where it starts to end with a more
'romantic' arrangement.

About the IT versions (of course I chopped them down to 6 channels):
In some way I like the 'mellotron' version more, because it sounds closer to the string quartet concept you mentioned.
And adding a chip version is brilliant. Because it shows that the core of a composition is in the pattern-scores, never mind
which instruments are performing it.
I will save this, because it's also prettty educational material about tracking, with 3 versions of the same work.
