I am searching for fx like shots, explosions and other such stuff, preferrably with 8 bit sound. Can anyone advice a resource?

I do know of free-sound and got some of the stuff off of there. But I need more )

sfxr can make some nice bleeps and blops that are suitable for 8-bit-like sounds. There are various projects based on sfxr like bfxr that can do a bit more, you can find these derivates on the web simply by searching for sfxr. The original program should be able to do the most sounds you want, though.

Well, it depends on what kind of shots and explosion sounds you want.

You can have the low-quality sampled style (think of Sonic 1 or Mario 3's "real" drum samples). These are easy to make yourself: take any gunshot sound and downsample it to a very low frequency. If you wish, you can upsample it again and interpolate the missing data so you get a somewhat sharp-sounding but obviously low-quality sound.

Or you can have the sound effects that are created by playing back  the sawtooth wave, white noise, square wave etc. in certain combinations. Trick here is to set a fairly high row count in MPT and using effects like volume slide or portamento. Here's an awesome little (semi-)chiptune that has some nice usable samples as well as an example of what I mean (see pattern 11): https://dl.dropbox.com/u/26026874/mario%20airlines%20%28keygen%20edit%29.xm

I've got a bunch more samples, too. Not many explosions or gunshots, I believe, but some usable stuff. (I use a lot from the "some chipsamples" pack.)
