Was watching the 12.12.12 concert and Pink Floyd played their classic "Another Brick in the Wall." When they got to the anticipated guitar solo at the end of the song, i realized as the guitarist belted it out that that has got to be one of top three guitar solos of ALL music. It's not especially virtuosic but unmistakable in its content and can really go in only one place in all of Rock's repertoire.

But it got me to thinking: what ARE the top 5 electric guitar solos of all time?

Interested in you guys's take, and i may take this question to some other forum, but i wanted your two cents first. (BTW, i'm interested in the average rock listener's viewpoint, not professional critics, who tend to dissect music to death  ::) )

Let's stipulate the parameters:

  • The guitar solo has to be longer in duration than one pass of the song's normal chord sequence (in the verse or chorus for example), which rules out any short bridges or refrains. Not interested in great hooks or riffs for this discussion.
  • Only one guitar -- no other prominent soloists during the solo. This leaves out most of Saga and Yes.
  • Any FX is okay, any music genre okay.
  • Does not have to be "mass heard" but has to be accessible for others to check it out. The band had to have their music (but not necessarily the track you name) played on commercial radio. This is not so much a popularity contest as much as a history lesson.
Fair enough?

Now what in your opinion are the top 5 electric guitar solos?

Here's my take, in no particular order:

  • "Another Brick in the Wall" (Pink Floyd); lyrical and expressive, with no repetition
  • "You Better Run" (Pat Benatar); Benatar's hubby, producer, songwriter, and long-time guitarist Neil Girardo always had driving strong solos and he applies this tour de force to a 3/16 beat; it also helps to have a master drummer behind you
  • "Take Me to the Top" (Loverboy); 80s rock band whose guitarist always planted a memorable solo on their songs; there are a lot of Loverboy songs i could have named, but this solo is masculine, sensuous, and narrative
  • "Sultans of Swing" (Dire Straits); Mark Knopfler has one of the best blues-jazz styles of all guitarists alive today; i could have named several Straits songs for my list
  • "Jane" (Jefferson Starship); hard-driving and a perfect complement to the lead singer
As you can see i'm a child of the 80s, and i'm sure i am not quite old enough to appreciate a lot of the 60s and 70s masters like Hendrix, Paige, and Clapton. I am open to convincing arguments.  8)

BTW, i would argue that with a few notable exceptions, the era of the EG solo died by 1990.

I can really appreciate this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iLIhLv8LuY

I'm not sure if you can classify this as a solo, cus technically it are 2 guitars who play their solo together.

I can't get on YouTube from my location. What is it? Is it a "classic" Rock EG solo?

Oh. ok.

1.) Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
2.) Jimi Hendrix - Vodoo Child
3.) Black Sabbath - Neon Knights
4.) Angus Young (Pick one they are all awesome) saw Ac/Dc Live last year and he was the man.

I stick with four if that`s allright, don´t wanna pick some random stuff just to fill the form.

Mr.Eagle

Ok. Here are my top five (in exactly this order ;) ):

1.) Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (The P.U.L.S.E.)

2.) Genesis - Old Medley (solo played by Daryl Stuermer)

3.) Toto - Jake to the Bone (I'd prefer the studio version here, but unfortunately I didn't find a video of this version...)

4.) Nightwish - High Hopes (Well, I'm a fan of Pink Floyd AND Nightwish and I really love this cover and the guitar-solo...)

5.) Metallica - The Unforgiven
sorry for my bad English
