I noticed that when importing midi there are like 8 samples for one instrument... like 8 sample for electric guitar when there is only 1 electric guitar instrument. during playback it only uses the first sample...

why does Modplug have the need to create multiple samples for each instrument if it only uses one???

OpenMPT fetches its samples from Windows' built-in soundfont (GM.DLS) be default. Like in most soundfonts, every instrument there is multi-sampled, meaning that several samples are used, depending on the note that is played (for example for C-5 to B-5 it might use samples 1, for C-6 to B-6 it might use sample 2...) - OpenMPT has to import all of these samples of course since I won't know in advance which samples of an instrument will be used, so it just keeps them all.

quick question about that...

will the 'cleanup' option in the 'edit' menu remove the midi samples it doesn't use???

Saga Musix

Why don't you try it yourself? If you choose to use "remove unused samples", it will do so.
