What exactly is the Quad mixing mode?

How does actually the Quad mixing mode work? Does it use more hardware channels (= hardware mixing)?

It's 2 stereo channels for surround. Enabling "surround" for a channel will send it to the rear speakers. It only works with analog output and not with VST instruments/effects.

Indeed, I've found out in the past that MPT's 4-channel WAV format isn't supported by any digital audio editors.
Which I found a pity, because 4-channel output is my main thing. The tools you're writing sound promising in my case, since I've integrated the OGG-format on my system.

A question about this 'oggenc'. Is this a special OGG-codec to create multi-channel OGG-files ? So far I got
stuck with the conversion into stereo..

Thanks for the crisp explanation about the matter.
And thanks for the other compiled utils. I will check out the commands of the other 3 apps.
My search for AoTuV so far ended in a blocking of the access to it by Yahoo, but I will keep searching.
