Title: The VST Effects topic
Post by: LPChip on February 01, 2006, 14:15:00
Before you do anything, note this: This topic is only about VST Effects. There is a seperate topic about VST Instruments!

Since MODPlug Tracker is able to use VST effects, people get more into using them. There are sites like kvraudio.com that is dedicated to providing free vst's, as its for payed ones too.

The question is: Have you played with an interesting VST latelly and want to tell everyone about? Then this is the topic to do so.

Here's a little template you can copy to use for your reply.

Name of VST:

License: Freeware, shareware, buy, etc... (shareware = download for try, buy is only download after payment) and ofcource if there's a price, how much it costs!
Link to VST or site: Provide us with a link where you can download the vst. If its a commercial one you can point the download to their website with price info etc.

This VST does: Parametric Equalizer
Quality: Good allrounder, Amazing where suited. Low CPU usage.
License of this VST (and costs): contribute-ware
Link to VST or site: http://www.digilogue.de/

The Blue-line package has no limitations, but they ask for you to send $35 if you end up using them.
Whilst the package has many VST's, Im focusing on the Equalizer for now.

Lovely unique character! The bass is a very mellow, whilst the treble is crisp. It has a lot of presence and is very good at both increasing and reducing frequencies. It has 4 bands and if it had just one more, Id be a lot happier. Nevertheless, amongst many far more expensive VSTs, this one has a permanent place in my collection.

I can't believe this isn't here, but Chainer is a must-have for MPT. While i'm not currently using it, Tassel of Blue is using it in her EDM and swears by it. She has taught me a little about what it can do, and when i get back to tracking songs for Aeon, i will definitely be using it. I'm sure a link can be found at KVR, but for those who don't know, it's not free.

But it should be required reading, so to speak. It really opens up MPT's capabilities. Thanks to LPChip, we never would have tried it were it not for his "advertising".

Distorque a sorti Rangebastard, émulation de Dallas Rangemaster treble boost.

QuoteThis is an emulation of an Dallas Rangemaster with added controls for tweaking or for use as a full-range booster, an overdrive, and more. It runs in mono or stereo, and has 2x oversampling (always on).

The Rangemaster was a Germanium transistor treble boost developed in the 1960s. It and similar effects have been used by Eric Claption, Brian May, and many more great guitarists. It's most often used to drive a distorted tube amp into more distortion, while boosting the upper-mids for a screaming lead sound.

Coded in C++, using VST SDK 2.4 and VSTGUI 4.0.

ToneBoosters a sorti TB EZQ.

QuoteTB EZQ is a zero-latency, VST implementation of the work by Andrew Sabin and Bryan Pardo from the interactive audio lab at Northwestern University, IL, USA. They developed a method to automatically map common equalization manipulations involving multiple equalizer controls onto descriptive terms such as 'warm', 'dark' and 'bright'. These descriptive labels can subsequently be placed onto a 2-dimensional space, in which each point represents a certain amount of 'warmth', 'darkness', and 'brightness'. More information can be found in their paper.

TB EZQ consists of a static implementation of their results with fixed descriptors. With this plugin, common equalization tasks to manipulate warmth or brightness can be performed much more efficient than with common equalizers involving many controls that require manipulation.

TB EZQ FEATURES

*Zero-latency processing.
*Support of all sampling rates from 44.1 to 192 kHz.
*Simple and intuitive user interface.
*Based on the VST 2.4 specification to allow compatibility with virtually all host programs.
*TB EZQ is available to download as a freeware VST plug-in for Windows and Mac.

Bob Leggitt sort Real Rotor

QuoteThe FreeST Real Rotor VST rotary speaker effect replicates the sound of a mic'd up, valve-type, bass-plus-horns rotary speaker cabinet, as typically used with an old Hammond organ. It's a development of my original Real Rotor effect, which was integrated into the FreeST VSTX3 virtual organ. Not only does this new version have improvements over the original, it's also the first time the rotary has been available in its own right, not as part of an instrument. So now the Real Rotor can be used with any VST organ, and indeed any other instruments you feel it would suit.

QuoteThese are highly individual, but extremely musical freeware devices which have the sonic aura of a classic vintage stomp box range.

Among the first batch are some offbeat and interesting units including an analogue delay, a very cool guitar amp simulator (also brilliant for bass or clonewheel organ), a sophisticated 'dimension'-style symphonic chorus, a cyclic filter and a standalone vibrato.

Adam Szabo sort Phazor.

QuotePhazor is a free effect plugin, which emulates the phaser effect found in the Virus synthesizers, which helped make its characteristic sound. A lot of time was devoted to make it sound very close to the original and every control has been carefully adjusted to behave just like the phaser from the Virus.

It has selectable 1 to 6 stage all-pass filters controlled by an LFO, with spread and feedback controls. The plugin is highly optimized and its CPU usage is minimal, allowing for multiple instances to be used in a project.

Jon Grove a sorti J-Scope.

QuoteWhilst experimenting with writing a VST synthesizer plugin, I found I needed an oscilloscope whose behaviour I understood. The synth plugin has not yet made it to a state where I feel it's worth releasing, but I think the oscilloscope may be useful to someone.

I've tried to make it fairly similar to a real oscilloscope, although the fact that the waveform is fed to it in bursts which don't necessarily synchronise with the computer's display refresh rate or with the oscilloscope's sweep rate makes it hard to accurately model a real screen.

J-SCOPE FEATURES:

*Accepts a stereo signal, and can display it in several modes.
*Timebase from 1s/div (0.1Hz) to 0.1ms/div (1kHz).
*Gain (Y) from x0.1 to x100.
*DC or AC coupled.
*Variable X-offset of trace(s).
*Y-offsets of stereo traces individually adjustable.
*Adjustable trigger level, on positive or negative slopes.
*Delayed triggering.
*Display 'freeze' option.
*Adjustable phosphor persistence.
*Optional graticule with variable brightness.
*8 preset modes for quick setup.

Kuassa a sorti basiQ.

QuotebasiQ is an acronym for Baxandall Simulation Equalizer, a FREE 3-band equalizer plugin with photorealistic graphics from Kuassa, Inc. As the name implies, the engine are modeled after a design of classic baxandall equalizer well known for its smooth shelves and natural-sounding responses, similar to the tone control on a hi-fi systems. The simple controls allow you to shape the frequency from many sources to your needs, from opening up an air on guitar leads, adding a gentle shimmer on vocals, giving extra 'oomph' on your synth basslines, or even getting more presence from your masters.

This straightforward equalizer are well-suited for mixing or mastering purpose although the neutral characteristic of basiQ are more suitable as a 'sweetening' device or giving some transparent 'tilt' to your mix rather than a surgical device, best paired on master output with Kratos Maximizer, another audio processing plugin from Kuassa, Inc.

BASIQ FEATURES:

*Simple tone control with large Low, Mid, and High knobs.
*Preset Management with 12 preset slot within a single bank.
*Mono and Stereo applicable.
*Supports up to 96 kHz Sample Rate.
*Compact and straightforward user interface.

toneboosters sort TB OmniSone.

QuoteTB OmniSone is a zero-latency VST plugin to (re-)pan sound sources, even outside the loudspeaker base. It also allows for increasing the perceived 'width' or spatial extent, and depending on the spectral content, may allow to subtly modify the perceived height of a source. Simply position the handles to change the desired position of each input signal, and use the mouse wheel to modify the spatial width.
Please note that TB OmniSone is still in an experimental phase and the results and effectiveness of TB OmniSone will depend on the (spectral) properties of the audio signals, the employed loudspeaker setup, and the anthropometric properties of the listener. Best results are obtained with high-quality loudspeakers placed at +/- 30 degrees as seen from the listener position.

Features:
*It's free!
*Zero-latency processing
*Support of all sampling rates from 44.1 up to 192 kHz
*Simple and intuitive user interface
*Both input channels can be re-positioned individually
*Based on the VST 2.4 specification to allow compatibility with virtually all host programs

Klanghelm sort DC1A

QuoteDC1A is the little brother of the compression monster DC8C. I've taken one of my favourite settings from DC8C and tried to make it work in a two control context. Soundwise it's comparable to the PUNCH mode in DC8C. It's  kind of a mixture of classic opto and FET designs.
I've always wanted to do a compressor with just an input and output knob, a compressor that just works: gentle, faithful, from almost invisible, smooth leveling to heavy pumping with a nice crunchy saturation and punchy enough to treat drums with.
DC1A looks like a one trick pony. But don't get fooled by lack of further controls. You may be suprised on how many different material this little thing works. DC1A is heavily program dependent, so is the saturation.

Variety Of Sound a sorti NastyDLA mkII

QuoteThe mkII version of this plug-in is an overall technical redesign and features "stateful saturation" algorithms for an overall improved sound experience and changes several things under the hood. Basically, NastyDLA mkII remains feature wise the very same but introduces the input stage modelled by this new and exciting technology and also redesigns the tape compression algorithm for an improved IM distortion performance. In general, the distortion generation appears to be more analog like and the perception of width and depth has been improved significantly.

CHANGES IN NASTYDLA MKII:
*The behaviour of the input stage has been changed. It acts output level compensated now and only is active if the SAT switch is engaged. It is modeled based upon a stateful saturation algorithm which sound wise turns in to a way better distortion performance as well as a more "3d" sound perception.
*The tape compressor has been improved for a better IM distortion performance and a less muddy sound.
*The level of noise which can be dialed in has been altered. The level itself is corrected and by moving the according knob to the left-most position the noise can be switched off.

One Small Clue a sorti Orange Chorus

QuoteI'm considering creating a series of free effect plugins, partly inspired by the Kjaerhus Classic series.

My current thought is to only create plugins which can be made with simple GUIs. Say a maxiumum of 8 knobs or switches. The simple controls will be a limiting factor on how effects are designed. However that should make the GUI's quicker to produce, leaving more time to focus on the effect algorithms which is more fun.

My goal was to create a clear chorus effect that could be used to thicken or blur synth parts or vocals. I'm fairly happy with the plugin so far. Depending on the feedback I might tweak the chorus algorithms a bit more. I'm not sure about the all knob GUI design. I think it makes for an attractive overall layout, but perhaps switches would better represent the functionality of the MODE and SHAPE parameters.

Tokyo Dawn Labs a sorti Feedback Compressor

QuoteA carefully designed dynamic range compressor. The processor is dedicated to sum/bus compression and is the result of an intensive study about the musical behavior of the feed-back compressor topology. Most modern compressors analyze the input signal to control gain reduction. The feed-back compressor design however "listens" to its output. This non-intuitive approach delivers an unobtrusive and highly musical compression characteristic that is able to handle complex signals with ease.

FEEDBACK COMPRESSOR FEATURES:

*Beautiful "Feed-Back Compression" sound and behavior.
*64bit floating point precision for all relevant calculations.
*Differential oversampling structure.
*Internal re-sampling via high quality linear phase filters.
*Advanced stereo-linking (reduces audible cross-modulation).

*Freely adjustable compression knee.
*Upward compression mode.
*Optional side-chain 6dB/Oct high-pass and 3dB/Oct energy equalization filters.
*Optional "color" functions.
*Independent release controls for fast and slow program material.
*Delta preview mode. Allows to preview the difference between compressed and original signal.

Variety Of Sound a sorti TesslaPRO mkII

QuoteBased on stateful saturation algorithms, it features an internal expandable 'color model' architecture and right from the start five different models are already included being three different 'console style' models plus one generic 'tube stage' and a 'tape warmth' saturation model.

It also introduces advanced DSP processing which is designed to have it applied across the entire mixing stage by featuring zero latency processing and further optimized assembler coding yielding a ~40% lower CPU footprint compared to its predecessor. Its very unique transient control appears further improved, vibrant 2nd order harmonic generation was added and better support for gainstaging is included now.

Name of VST:
PaulXStretch

This VST does:
sample stretching, it plays loops and can stretch them with bits very well

Quality:
**** - I have been having trouble figuring out why I was getting a lag, turned out I needed to turn the prebuffer to none and the timing comes into place, this wasnt exactly obvious and I have to make this change every time I load a loop , something like this should probably be a vsti instead of a vst, but it works with plugin bridge and in 64bit modplug, I dont use 64bit and so the fact that it works with bridge was a plus.
Sound quality is close to great, but it takes some tweaking every time. (cannot slide the sliders)

You will find that happening with many free plugins over the years (the post you are quoting is 13 years old!) and it doesn't make sense to point out every dead link because of that. Generally I would advice against using such old plugins even if you can find a working download link because if they are not maintained anymore, chances are high that they have issues with newer operating systems, hosts or technologies (such as high-DPI screens or 64-bit processors) that will never be fixed.
Try reading this thread back to front rather than front to back as it will be much more likely that you will find working download links that way.

Let me clarify my point a bit: If someone starts out making music now, they should be starting with the 64-bit version of OpenMPT (32-bit will die at some point, if you want it or not), and thus if they are just starting out with plugins, I think they should use modern plugins that have a native 64-bit version and that are DPI-aware so that they run well on modern high-DPI screens. The plugin bridge more or less only exists as a temporary solution for people who want to use these kind of plugins that they have grown used to, but in the end there are many disadvantages with this solution (most notably every bridged plugin introduces latency, and the plugin bridge isn't perfectly stable).
Old VST plugins are the main reason why OpenMPT isn't DPI-aware by default and looks blurry on high-DPI screens. I could make it DPI-aware by default but then people would complain about tiny VST UIs. This is also something that will die out eventually, and for newcomers I'd rather like to point them directly at future-proof 64-bit and DPI-aware plugins that most of the time sound just as good as those old plugins (or better).

Ah, that is a very valid point Saga Musix. In fact I had not even considered that 32 bit plugins will go extinct at some point, and I use so many 32 bit plugins.. I have some 64 bit plugins to, but they are in the minority.
Title: Re: The VST Effects topic
Post by: Saga Musix on January 22, 2019, 21:25:06
Random site note: If you have both the 32-bit version and the 64-bit version of a plugin installed, and they are identically-named, OpenMPT will prefer the version that matches the current OpenMPT instance's bitness. This can be useful when you use lots of 32-bit and 64-bit plugins and switch between 32-bit and 64-bit OpenMPT versions for that reason.

One of my new freeware favourites in recent times is voiceofsnow (https://www.kvraudio.com/product/voiceofsnow-by-sundevstudio). To reiterate the developers description of the plugin, it uses spectral analysis to split the input signal into noise and tone components. As the name implies, it is great for touching up vocal samples, and can be used to rescue dull-sounding vocal recordings by making them sound a bit more breathy. It also works wonders for fixing the output of vocoders, which often lacks treble and is thus not very intelligible (I wish I had know the plugin the last time I used a vocoder!), or retouching older recordings. Highly recommended for any sort of vocal processing, but it can be interesting to apply it to other instruments as well. It even has limited use as a de-noiser e.g. for 8-bit samples, though they should have more tonal content than noise content for this to sound good.
Note that the plugin adds quite a bit of latency, so it's best used for offline processing of samples.
