Title: Volume level question
Post by: herodotas on March 14, 2019, 07:07:06
Hi,
Why rendered with "Render to wave" samples are not at the same volume levels like original source? They are usually quieter.

Export samples are exactly the same volume  as regular playback unless you enable the "Normalize" option. But when you import the sample back into a sample slot again, its volume will depend on the Sample Volume (http://wiki.openmpt.org/Manual:_General#Volume_Settings) setting on the General Tab, which indicates at which volume level the sample will play if it is played at full volume (i.e. all volume parameters set to max). This setting would have to be at 0dB for the sample to be played at original volume, but this is not the default as it would lead to overdriven output almost instantly.

Maybe it is possible add option to compensate difference, because it is a little annoying in the cases then you need resample part of Vsti track to be perverted :) with effects commands, and sample not sound at same level, like rest part.

It's currently technically impossible to provide over-amplification in the engine. It's a feature I would personally would like to see as well but it's not going to happen until the sample mixer is entirely based on floating-point math. The current integer mixer just cannot provide any more headroom without sacrificing quality.
The best approximation you can currently have is copy-pasting your sample into several pattern channels.
