I am confused why when I open an .IT file and save my file, the file is replaced with a file that is 0 kb and sometimes the program will crash. In the image below, I just saved mechanic2.it and mechanic3.it. It keeps happening. Thank god I had backups..

Well, sounds like it was crashing while saving the file, then!
However, OpenMPT tries to rescue modified files during a crash to %TEMP%\OpenMPT Crash Files\, so if you made any changes to it, you may find a working version there. The last time there was a bug in the IT saver was more than a year ago, though, so please verify that you are actually using the latest version.
If you do, please provide a simple test case which can be used to reproduce the crash.
