Rules are simple. I'll post a song that I've made (probably some time ago) and you have to guess where it originates from.
The winner may then post a song and we have to guess again...
EDIT: The song that you post must be a remake or a simple remix. If its a remix, make sure that the style is as close to the original (which is close to a remake). So no completelly other style than the original song used to be. Eg: an house version of fur-elise is ofcource out of the question.
Guess this one: http://lpchip.com/sharing/guess.it (this one contains 2 songs actually)
fuck.... i know this one :D
btw: haha... LP does breakz
Time to give a hint.
These two songs are heard in a C64 game, and the game is about music. ;)
erm, give my regards to broad street?
Nicky
nope. The game starts with a T
The objective of the game is to create a song.
First you go to a device and play a little game. Based on this game, you'll get certain song facettes. Next you go to a synthesizer to add dynamics to your song. Then you go to the studio to make a good mix of it. If you do really well, you can go to the studio to make a movie clip.
Do the songs have to be from games, or can they be any well known song?
i got a flash to
"Jumpin' Jackson",
but my device was A500 & don't know how it was called in C64
Songs has to be from a game or something on television.
Its not Jumpin Jackson. (it was also called that on the c64)
Quote from: "LPChip"Songs has to be from a game or something on television.
now i'm a little bit concerned...
does anybody here really have a TV??
If I had played the game I probably would have guessed it by know... But I do have a TV.
Forget the TV, does anyone here have a C64? :P ::)
Quote from: "Squirrel Havoc"Forget the TV, does anyone here have a C64? :P ::)
I had a C64 for a long time until it finally gave up to me. I still have all the discs converted to emulator format so I can still play the games.
I had a C64. I never really had any games for it, though.
Quote from: "Wong"I had a C64. I never really had any games for it, though.
that's so sad...
by the way: is this contest still running?
i am definitly interested what the original source of the module was!
8)
Since no one knew what it was, I'll hereby present what the source was.
The gamemusic was from: To be on top (http://www.tld-crew.de/cover-html/tobeontop.htm)
Best emulator to play this: CCS64 (http://www.computerbrains.com/ccs64/) (scroll down to download. I've played with version 3 b 1.7)
note: When it asks to press [run/stop], press escape.
I'll get another song up to guess, which'll be easier.
http://lpchip.com/sharing/guess.zip
This is the themesong of this particular game. Good luck. :)
sorry, but i don't play c64 all day (although i have one and often visit c64/amiga parties in berlin)
::)
I had a cardboard box with a keyboard drawn on it when i was 10, and would pretend that was a c64, thats as close as I got. But i was a psychotic kid :P
Any idea what the 2nd link (in the post on the top of this page) is about?
Its NOT a C64 game ;)
Wow, the beginning sounds like the intro to the movie Top Gun :)
I have no clue what it is though. When was the game released? It sounds before my time...

Can't tell the exact date though, but it was somewhere between 1994 and 1997

sorry, too difficult for me. too many games came out in that time.
all i recognize are the samples/instruments that i also used to use
anyway, has the slightly touch of a real Midi-Sound-GoldenAxe-2Player Game and two guys hammering on one keyboard :D
Nope sorry. There's one thing you're correct about though... Its midi, and this is what I heard over my Gus. :)
I know this one! It's the theme from Rise of The Triad. I spent YEARS playing that game.
(I don't have any songs to post because I'm still getting used to the program.)
Doh! I played that game a lot, but I never noticed the music

Thats correct! :) Well done. If you have a remake (or be able to make one for us to guess?)
If you don't you may pass your turn to someone else? I should have another one. Thats more of a remix though, so i guess i should make a new song instead.
ROTT had great music - "Going Down the Fast Way" (first level of the demo version) sounded like it could have been from a Sonic game or something.
Damn, too bad I didn't finish my remake of the Fatal Mission music, it would have been killer, since NO ONE played it (google for it, you can find the original amiga mods).
Made this just this afternoon: here you go (http://skilfulscribe.compactvision.org/Jan06/guess2_7.it). One of my favourite video game songs ever. This was on Sega Megadrive/Genesis. :D
Hmm, sounds like it's from one of the Sonic games, but I don't think it is
I know I've heard this before, but I can't place it! It's not one of the Streets of Rage games, is it?
Yuzo Koshiro is one of my favourite composers, but nope, it's not Streets of Rage. ;)
Outrun ?!
This song is a typical platformgame song with a hero with powers and such. like megaman etc... It isn't megaman is it?
Super Wonderboy? (I have no idea)
Golden Axe? (I'm just guessing wildly)
Vectorman? (Also just guessing)
Alls I knows is that it aint Shadowrun, which is my fave genesis/megadrive game, you gotta check it out
Quote from: "LPChip"This song is a typical platformgame song with a hero with powers and such.. like megaman etc...
Yep.
Quote from: "LPChip"It isn't megaman is it?
Nope. ;)
Here's a massive hint: the game has a huge preoccupation with farm animals and absurd humour.

Jurassic Park!
Old Drunk Waldo Gets Too Friendly On The Farm! :o
I have no idea, and I've played hundreds of genesis games. Was it released in the US do you know?
Oh, Earthworm Jim! It has to be - only Dave Perry's mind could come up with something like that.
"Anything but Tangerines" from Earthworm Jim 2, to be precise.
Doh! I only played the SNES version of earthworm jim (and the GBA version), but for some reason I didn't recognize the tune. Man I suck! :P
Quote from: "Squirrel Havoc"Doh! I only played the SNES version of earthworm jim (and the GBA version), but for some reason I didn't recognize the tune. Man I suck! :P
believe me, i am disappointed by myself too.
for what did i spent most time of my life (so far) with games

YES! It's Anything but Tangerines by Tommy Tallarico, one of the gods of videogame music.
Here's one by me - actually this was done absolutely years ago so it sounds pretty basic, but I think it's pretty close to the game in question.
To provide a complete non-hint, the game was made by the same people as one of the games that's already been mentioned.
http://wired.st-and.ac.uk/~wong/modsite/songs/wotsit.s3m
Wow, that sounds like Fatal Mission music, but I believe it isnt. Robin Burrows was a good programer, and for a programmer, a damn good musician.
I've heard this one before. Heck, I actually have the original module somewhere on my HD.
first i thought that i definitly know this one too.
but after some minutes of brain storming i came to the conclusion that the music just sounds familiar to me because they're all good old MOD-style :D
It's been a while, so here's another hint: It's from a game published by Apogee.
I'd rather not have killed the topic, so to make it a bit more obvious: It was developed by Animation FX.
(Completely flogging a dead thread)
Increasingly obvious clue #4: It has some towers in it. They're mystic.
Could it be: Mystic Towers? :P
i failed again. my childhood seems indeed to been totally wasted...
It was! How did you guess?
Quote from: "Wong"It was! How did you guess?
I dunno... :P It just came to me. :P
I'll find a nice song and make a remake of it, shortly.
I'd like to change the rules a little bit. You don't have to make a new song as entry for us to guess. If you can record it to mp3, then thats okay too. Also, if you have the original file, its okay (except for midi, due to the different sound on each pc) So if you have a midi, just record to mp3/ogg on your system. You may also import in mpt if you can get something nice from it.
Don't forget to alter your original song so we can't see in its info what song we're guessing at. :)
Anyway, here's my next entry for ya'll to guess: http://lpchip.com/sharing/guess.zip
Good luck. :) Its a classic, but a well known classic.
Rise of the triads again?
Quote from: "speed-goddamn-focus"Rise of the triads again?
nope. sorry.
Yes it is - you've given the wrong link! I think the new one is http://lpchip.com/sharing/guess.it - I don't know what it is, though.
OMG LOOOOOOOOOL
I forgot to upload the file.. DUH! :) File has now been uploaded.

You are allowed to record a song from a game and share as mp3.
I'll put an easy one up to tide us over:
http://wired.st-and.ac.uk/~wong/guess.mp3
This is from a game that had fantastic music, but is famous for a very different reason.

sounds like Lotus3 (but not 100% similar)

now i'm sure that it's not Lotus
I can't download
hey...
what's up?
already dead topic?
Download went fine, but I have no clue about the song.
In the meantime a rather easy one I guess : Fremens2 (http://www.louigiverona.com/webarchive/samzen/modz/Fremens2.mod).
As a bonus, maybe for some gamers : I found an app running on a win pc, that can play the SID-files : SIDplayer (http://www.louigiverona.com/webarchive/samzen/download/sidplayer.zip)
Quote from: "Sam_Zen"Download went fine, but I have no clue about the song.

Nope. Here's another clue : Wormsign (http://www.louigiverona.com/webarchive/samzen/modz/wormsign.mod).
Quote from: "Sam_Zen"Nope. Here's another clue : Wormsign (http://www.louigiverona.com/webarchive/samzen/modz/wormsign.mod).
Now, that can't be from anything else than Dune, the original Dune from 1990 (though in my midi version of that soundtrack, the song is named Wormintro, not wormsign, which made me a little confused, as there is a song named Wormsign in Dune 2/2000 which sounds nothing like it as far as I can remember).
That was a wonderful game by the way, with a great soundtrack.
Indeed from Dune I. An unknown artist made this. A great game, still fitting on one diskette.
Another one I've found : Ecolove (http://www.louigiverona.com/webarchive/samzen/modz/ecolove.mod).
I have all the dune 1 mods, so at the first post I already recognised the filename. :) They're great songs though! Still I think Dune 2 songs are better.
Does anybody knows the current gamesongs? If not, can the original poster perhaps tell us the answer, and provide a new one to guess?
Here's another one, until we somehow find out what that other one was.
http://medlem.spray.se/fisk0/temp/theme.it (edit: oops, wrong URL)
This game is about 10 years old, and has had an sequel (or, just another game based on the same writings, I don't really know) coming for a few years now, but as far as I know it is still unreleased.
About mine - It's likely that you'll know a scene, or one specific phrase from the game, as it's one of the most timeless geek in-jokes. Unfortunately.
I am certain that I know fisk0's, but I can't name it.

My guess then is that it is from "All your base are belong to us" Zero Wing, even though I have played that game I can't remember much of its soundtrack.
well...i'm a little bit confused which is the actual one right now...
we should keep order to avoid confusion/crossed communication
That's the one, fisk0!
cyperkid - I think the only one that hasn't been answered is fisk0's one from over the page.

i'm recognizing a trumpet (or at least a sampled one) in it...
if this melody is connected to any cultural area at all, than it's more a melancholic Mexican death march than any Persian (its princes) related tune 8)

Ah, that isn't in the original, in the original post there was something about changing the music a little (but still keeping it recognisable (spelling)), which I did.
The trumpet sample was added by me (and taken from a soundfont).

Quote from: "LPChip"But they are the same kind of instrument right? Otherwise I think its a too big change.
Hmm, no, not really. Though they are the same kind of instruments used through the whole soundtrack, this song didn't use most of them.
But the length of the tones are the same, and except for instrument changes no other real changes have been made to the song. Though I may not be surprised if you haven't played the game. It's one of the game that came around the same time as the first two Alone in the dark games, and is in the same style.
Well. I could post the original midi file if you want, though if you do not recognize the melody in this one, you may not recognize the original either.
Is it Shadow of the Comet?
Quote from: "Wong"Is it Shadow of the Comet?
Close. I don't think they have the same soundtrack, but as I haven't managed to get any music to play in my Shadow of the comet I'm not sure.
(Ouch, guess it got a little too easy now)
Was it that sort of "Alone in the Dark 1 and a half" that was released just before the second one, then? Jack in the Dark, I think.

Fisk, Perhaps you can tell us what the correct answer is?
Quote from: "LPChip"Fisk, Perhaps you can tell us what the correct answer is?
Sure, sorry, I've been away for a while.
The Correct Answer was The Call Of Chtulhu 2: Prisoner Of Ice.
Which means "Shadow of the Comet" was pretty damn near, as that game is also known as The Call Of Chtulhu 1: Shadow of the Comet.
I didn't know that Prisoner of Ice was a sequel to Shadow of the Comet. I'll have to go and download it now.
Update: Done.
