w00t?
Purple Motion will be a judge? Cool!!!
I cant wait for that millions of billions of dollars prize!
yup, Jonne agreed to judge :)
the price will be useful experience and also this essence, called Fame And Glory
Great, I like the initiative of this site these days. I'm gonna start preparing today, and see how the lines are drawn.
I see that one might actually include chords - according to rules - this time. Good to know. I must admit I see no reasons not to include a few supporting/defining chords if you are allowed. Unless the judges reward melodies that run their own life better.
apple-joe: that rule was in the first OVC as well.
I've read, its not allowed to use appregio's... I assume you aren't allowed to use them to display chords only? And ofcource they aren't being changed over the song unless the chord changes?
Cus it seems strange :P
Ofcource its not allowed to use appregio's during the main melody. I understand that, but also not for chords?
Well, anyway; chords + single melody, that'll do it. Maybe I even drop the chords, if I feel in the mood.
You can use arpeggios to show chords. The FAQ, of course, spoke of the lead melody.
The chord picture should be static - no boom-cha-cha, no any other structure. Just static chords in key places - that is, if the chord changes, you show it.

Great! I'll make a chiptune, especially for Purple Motion. :)
Guys! What's going on? First week of the compo is getting over and I have no entries from modplug! Sam Zen? LP Chip and his promised one voice chip? apple-joe? C'mon, guys! I want modplug representatives in my compo!
Oh, all right.
I've lost my inspiration :s
the best i can come up with, is a stupid song :S
I've had a little tracking break the recent days. Which might prove positive for the one voice compo; if I'm lucky and experience a flood of inspiration. I'll have a go very soon.
LPChip: Have a few days off without touching Modplug, and retry. Might work.
I've submitted a chip for this compo. Its not my best work, but it'll have to do. :) (its not that bad, otherwise i'd not submit it in the first place)
Great. Let's hope I'll deliver something myself soon.
LPChip: Your tune is great! Jonne should be happy )))
Quote from: "Louigi Verona"LPChip: Your tune is great! Jonne should be happy )))
:D Thanks! I really appreciate it. The more I listen to it, the more I like it myself. But still, I know I can do better :P
EDIT: I still mis my song on that page, so here's a link: http://lpchip.com/sharing/ovc-chip.zip
yeah, I add all the entries I recieved in the evening, when I come home.
I'm listening to one of the entries now, and the level is insane. I might consider to back off from this compo, or I may end up creating something.
First, I'll have to find some good sounding samples and see if I am able to build a fundament and develop it.
More later.
i'm thinking aboot pwning last place. yeah, i'ts probably mine, problem is... i forgot what teh tracker is...........
BTW, great idea for a compo.
i'm still waiting for sabotage 2.
im OT
Just to quickly say that Sabotage 2, in the shape and form that it was supposed to be, is scraped. The times have changed, and the concept doesn't fit anymore. I'm not against a compo though but i have very few ideas ATM concerning what kinda damn compo it should be. Any suggestions, questions, thoughts, friendly tax-free donations, should be sent to:
karmapolice@inet.hr
PLEASE, do not reply in this thread. ty
apple-joe: I think you should participate even if you think that other participants' level is higher. Only that way you learn.
Also, the judges will not care if you samples are of low quality. Believe me, they will pay attention to the content only.
The positioning of my attempt in the last competition is testament to that.
OK, I'll join if I come up with an idea worthy of developing.
You better come up soon with that idea :)
Yeah, the deadline was April 15?
Well, if I decide for a fundament, the rest of the song 'floods' out of my mind in no time. I just need to actually get started.
EDIT: I've actually come up with a rough draft now. If I'm lucky, the track will be worthy an upload after some improvement.
OK, I'm finally finished with a piece for the compo. The outcome is a little better than I feared it would be. I started out with a rough draft which I improved and improved during this evening. I am going to upload it, let's hope I'm not gonna regret it.
EDIT: Correction - I'll upload tomorrow after fixing some problems with the file.
I'm afraid I just submitted my track. My greatest concern now is the sound of the lead instrument, and whether it fits the setting.
EDIT: Lougi Verona, it wasn't my intention to spam your mail, but problems occured. The 3rd mail is the one to read.
The sound of the lead instrument should not be your concern. Your concern should be the melody.
Bummer, if I read this thread earlier, I would have joined in. Ah well, too late now, I guess I'll just in on the next compo at mpc
I was too lazy to upload what I made, though I did finish it. :D
Nope. Couldn't make myself write it. Though i came up with a good excuse so as not to waste it:
I just can't imagine making music with only one voice. I miss the interaction of sounds that really make the music. Screw melodies. Even ringtones have more freedom.
Not bad eh?
I entered but perhaps I was too late. Didn't quite understand whether I had the 15th or not.
Approximately when will the results be ready?
Dunno. All the judges except Jonne said they started. Jonne is busy, so he may come up late. I think if all's well, in a week or so.
Ok.
Any progress?
Quote from: "xaimus"I was too lazy to upload what I made, though I did finish it. :D
Which implies that you ...
A) Really are very very lazy
or
B) Aren't confident on the outcome (a little like me)
Might very well be A), as laziness may be quite pleasant sometimes.
still haven't got any replies from the judges. I'll mail them reminders again.

A all the way!

OK, great.
And a thought: Let's say all of the judges except one finished a week ago. The last one wouldn't finish until... let's say Saturday.
Would it, according to you, be right waiting for the last judge, or drop the last judge - concerning the rest was finished over a week ago? Hypothetical, but still interesting.
dunno. I might wait for him, since basically there is no reason to hurry. After all, what was important was the composing process which is over anyway.
current situation is different however as not a single judge responded. heh.
I talked to PPH last night, and he said that he hadn't listened to that many songs yet. He's too busy too.
OK, you're right - there is really no hurry. Yet, I'm about to become vey eager about the results. Especially as it was announced that they'd be ready around a week after deadline.
However, no one's gonna die, so I'll just keep on waiting.

your posts and your song title are very much in tune
patience
is a virtue, but we're all going to die sooner or later.

Why are you so eager in knowing how far down you've got?

1) Well, I am a little obsessed by compos these days.
2) Also, I like to get a certain form of feedback, to see whether I'm heading in this or that direction.
3) The tracking of this compos entry was a little more intense than the previous compo, for instance.
4) It was, after all, announced that the results were dued a week after the deadline.
Speed-goddamn: good observation.
Anyway, I take it I am not the only one who's eager about the outcome.
I'm interested myself, even though I didn't attend the compo as previously planned.
Because of the nature of the compo, I know it requires a decent skill set for a composer to possess so I trust the music to be intermediate to advanced.
Besides, I get off on hearing wonderful and INTELLIGENT tracks.
So freaking hurry up already.

Yessir. This is the first Compo Iv'e entered into ( my piece is Ever pools of Once ) and I realised that the level is pretty high and there are some outstanding pieces to compare. Definitely tough to judge.
Those voice samples you're using are amazing, KrazyKatz - what kind of instrument are they?
Bytheway, I did notice some of the files are no longer available.
If my memory serves me correctly, I believe apple-joe's entry was on a fileserveruploadwebsitethingy, which was expired.
Thanks for the reminder, LPChip, that might very well be true. I had to use yousendit as Tripod was down. Now what? Is it too late, or what happens?

You should probably upload it somewhere more permanent and let Louigi know about it so he can update the site.
Right - I'll try my Tripod account now.
EDIT: No, there's always something. Now the track sounded broken when uploaded to and then downloaded from my Tripod account. Maybe it works if I ZIP the .ogg file before uploading.
EDIT II: It works better now after zipping the .ogg file and re-uploading. I'll mail Louigi Verona about the changes.

It also requires a decent skill to judge all that. Nobody knew judging would be such a complex process. Believe me, the judges are working and the results I am getting, along with comments on every track, are well worth the wait. Also, keep in mind that people do have their real life with jobs, families and such. Really sorry to keep you waiting, but there's just no way I can speed up things.
apple-joe: recieved your new link, I will update the link this eve.
Verona: I see your point. Instead of whining for results I should have thought that as it takes some time, maybe the response is more sincere too.
fixed your link. but the site went down. don't worry, it'll be up soon.
site back online
Great.

Genuine Choir samples, including real soprano. Painstakingly converted to .iti files for use with modplug. My aim always is to create the most realistic sound possible, and I spend hours converting real instrument samples into custom Instrument files for Modplug.

Wow! That's a great initiative! You must have quite a collection now. Can you share a couple of iti instruments?
Ill be creating a new post shortly with regard to sharing instruments Mr. Verona.
Get those results out man!
:D
Cheers
I can hardly wait, KK - thanks for the reply!
1 judge to go - Jonne! We had some conversations over e-mail, he was really at it, but then - gone again. The rest of the judges handed in their votes. I can already see what are the winning tunes

Whichever you may prefer.
Maybe we should find a way to reduce the number of tracks judges must evaluate for next time. Twenty one is a big number of tracks to judge. What will happen if next time there are thirty tracks. Setting them in order of preference is a daunting task. A previous round could be added, so as to make a "pre-selection" and choose fifteen finalists. Then the judges vote like now, putting the finalists in order.
Pre-selection could be made by the judges themselves: it's easier to say "these are the fifteen best tracks" than to say "these are the tracks, ordered from better to worst". Each judge could send a list of the fifteen tracks they think are the best, in random order. The fifteen most voted tracks (if there is a draw among several tracks in the last of the fifteen, it could be acceptable to have more tracks) are then submitted to the second round, in which judges vote just like now.
What do you think?
Quote from: "PPH"What do you think?
I think ten tracks.
Sounds like an idea. Probably easier for the judges.
Yeah.
Or you could do it like this you devide the tracks among the judges.
Lets say, there are 30 songs, and 5 judges. If each judge listens to 6 songs, and they take out only the better songs (if possible give between 1 and 3) it should come to a bout 10~15 songs to sort.
They put it in order, and only top 10 is being listed? (so you get a list with the best songs)
Quote from: "speed-goddamn-focus"Quote from: "PPH"What do you think?

Yes, probably better. Fifteen was just an example. I think the quality and fairness of the judging is improved if the judges don't have so many tracks to judge.
Quote from: "LPChip"Yeah.

This option has two big disadvantages. First, if you divide the tracks like that, it can happen that a judge gets almost only bad tracks and another gets almos only good ones, and because each judge takes tracks from his pool, a bad track can end up being a finalist instead of a good track which was unlucky enough as to fall in the same pool as other good tracks. Second, judges have different criteria, which means all tracks should be judged by all judges. If not, tracks will be left out just because one judge didn't like them, even though all the rest of the judges would have let the track in (the opposite can happen too; a track that just one judge likes might end up as a finalist, leaving out a better track).

Yeah, you are right.
Perhaps, make a selection in the judge for those that have more time on their hands, and let them preview the entries, giving them a number from 1 to 10, and then make a selection of the songs by looking at the given ratings.
Or perhaps just accept the fact that judging may take long.
Quote from: "Louigi Verona"Or perhaps just accept the fact that judging may take long.
Yeah. That too.
I hope there will be OVC once more :D
