I proudly bring you the Mimic Music Competition!
This is a competition in music creation, but unlike a normal contest the aim is not to create the best that you can, but instead to mimic the style of your fellow musicians. That's right! Pick a style of music you'd like to replicate and get to work. In the end your work will be judged on the usual merits like technical complexity and creativity, the more biased and subjective emotional value, and on interpretive qualities of your work. To win you have to compose well, make it pleasant to the listeners ear, AND truly capture the essence of the composer you are going to mimic. How's that for a challenge?
This invitation goes out to every musician reading this as well as regulars from the Modarchive, ModPlug, CTGMusic, Psycledelics, MadTracker and other communities.
To read more visit the website: http://www.inet.hr/~dpekez/mimic-news.html
PS - Now spread the word.
Cheers

This is so cool I am so in!
Awww man, I don't even have my own style knocked yet, how can I mimic someone elses?
EDIT: Ah screw it all up the *** with a rubber ****** until its ***** falls off, you can count me in. Just to be in a georg compo again, brings back fond memories of my youth
Will the results be anonymous durring judging?
Ok, here's the first mimic of "Bitches Brew" by Miles Davis. An excerpt of a longer file, made with an analog synth :
Witches' Woe (http://www.samshuijzen.nl/sam/stracks/2wtchwoe.zip)
You said anything goes, does that mean I can use my bass guitar and not sample it, but capture the audio live and mix it on the computer? Or does it have to be some sort of electronic instrument, becuase I have a korg synth i never used
EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to say, what a kick ass idea for a compo. I like compos, but I like when they make you think, thats why I like OHCs so much
oooooh, sounds very cool, i just might do something in the style of chopin...
what are the compo dates tho? i dont see that anywhere on the site (maybe im just blind?).
Quote from: "Snu"oooooh, sounds very cool, i just might do something in the style of chopin...

You have until Wednesday, May 24th, to submit your entry. (it sayes so on the "entries" page"
The deadline is also in the F.A.Q. I invested at least 23 minutes of my life into writing that thing so at least you could humor me. I have special needs u know.
Squirrel Havoc: You can play your guitar live, or sample parts of it or just do what you like. I really mean it when i write that you're allowed to fart into a mic and make music that way. The challenge is to mimic a style of music, not to use only your leet trax skillz.
Not sure i understand your question about anonimity. If you ask wheter i'll reveal who the actual authors are the anwser is yes. I toyed with that idea but decided against it cos i'm affraid it might add to the confusion, and also because the URL to a song would usually give away the author.
If you ask wheter i will display the way each person voted then the anwser is no. You have my word however that any "fishy" votes will be sent back, and possibly disqualified. And since i'm not the only person receiving the votes i can't rigg them myself.
Thank you for the support and joining.

I'm still trying to think of someone to mimic that I can actually pull off. I can barely pull of Squirrel Havoc music....
i just got news from the president that anyone not entering the mimic compo will be sent to guantanamo, locked up and tortured regardless of nationality. those who do enter however, the pope informed me, are reserved a gold vip card in heaven.

Why'd i have to make such freakishly hard compo....................i can't make anything happen. But thinking about it seems kinda easy. ::)
I hate music
I think I'm in. I'll deliver an entry as long as I get to decide for an artist to mimic.
I might enter too, if I find time to compose.
I'd love to have you. Even though you'll probably win.

Ok, I have a question about the mimic part. Would it be OK to just pic one or 2 songs from someone and do the same style, or the same "flow" if you will? All the people I want to do make all kinds of music. It wouldn't be a remake of the song or anything like that, just the same flow of the song using the same style.
How does that sound?
That sounds remarkably close to the point of the compo :)
A remake would not be ok, since the point is to recreate a certain style not a certain song. The problem i'm having is that my song sounds nothing like it's supposed to sound. :( You really need to copy the style.
OTOH i suppose the last place would be mine for sure.
Quote from: "georg"i suppose the last place would be mine for sure.
oh no it won't.
I've given myself an nearly impossible task, yet I'm going to continue...
I've chosen to mimic Atlantis! :)
Atlantis? Is it very irregular not to have heard about them?
Atlantis is one of our fellows. He used to write in this forums quite a lot. He has stopped making music to devote himself to mixing and mastering, which he thinks are activities for which he is better suited. He is Dutch, but he lives in New Zealand.
(Hey, I should start charging to write Artist descriptions).
By the way, it would be good if everyone said who they are mimicking, right?

Hey, im from the land O' pop music, when I think lion king, I think elton john
I was thinking about doing something in the vein of Dvor?k's Serenade for Strings--it's one of my favorite pieces of music ever.
that means i'll need talent and inspiration, both of which i need :( :(
To Squirrel:
Yes, but there are only two songs of Elton John in the film. The rest of the music is from Zimmer.
Bloody hell. Call yourselves Musicians.
Hanz Zimmer only composed/co-composed for The Rock; Gladiator ; Pirates of the Carribean; Crimson Tide; Batman Begins; The Peacemaker; Broken Arrow ; Sense of Snow ; the Last Samurai ; The Lion King ; Black Hawk down and those are off the top of my head...
I was considering mimicking Hanz Zimmer but to be honest he so Generic with his own style that its rather easy to pull off. Ive been considering more in the lines of John Williams... But that will be hell on wheels.
Have to see where the inspiration goes.

I dont watch many mainstream movies
Damn! Squirrel beat me to it, but i was just gonna brag how i never bothered to watch those films. I'm sure thy're good cos they all made money and cos a lot of talent was involved but they are totally uninteresting to me.
I like teh gay films better. Just off the top of my head "Cosi e la vita". Hope i spelled it right.
Hows about Pearl Harbourl; The Prince of Egypt and Hannibal?
Thing is just as a musician one should be familiar with styles of music and he should thus know the regarded musicians associated with it. Any musician should know Miles Davis, and associate him with Jazz. Or Mozart with classical. Well Filmscores should also be included. The only Exception I can make is probably Modern Pop. Those Guys are here today and Gone tomorrow, but the long lasting ones should be a musicians knowledge ( such as Michael Jackoson etc... ).
But I hear what youre saying and I cant blame you for not seeing movies. It is mostly a waste of time, but you get some fantastic scores out there and some of these flicks are worth watching as a means of escapism and relaxation.
I dont remember the last Time I watched MTV so when people ask me if Ive heard Christine Aguileras new song and I respond with "whose that?" I generally get strange looks. but once again Aguilera aint gonna last nowhere near as long as Elvis, or Jackson or Davis or Mozart.
My thoughts

Yep, that's right (except for Pirates of the Caribbean, whose soundtrack was made by Klaus Badelt, or another one of these Hans Zimmer proteg?s). He has some good soundtracks, but he is quite generic, having quite a distinct "big orchestral mixed with modern drim beats" style (his best soundtracks are the ones in which he leaves this style, though, like "Driving Miss Daisy" and "Matchstick Men"). I'm mimicking the "big orchestral" style, of course.
I also thought about John Williams. But he is so varied, it makes it harder. Also, his music is more complex. (hmmm, maybe I should submit two entries? I don't think I'll have time, though)
Quote(except for Pirates of the Caribbean, whose soundtrack was made by Klaus Badelt
I know. But he was involved in the composing process, thats why I wrote Co-composer. Seems Media Ventures is taking over the World!
I wouldnt be surprised if the upcoming "Superman" is using Media Ventures for the project. I know its not John Williams composing, and damned if I know why since he set the scene. Anyhow were drifting from the Topic.

You are right, but remember that you can allways say *uck it and do something freakishy different. Anything goes and as long as there is a lot of effort in your work and a little bit of talent it will be worth it and good. Flavours are different cos people are different but good ice-cream is good ice-cream.
Sort of... :)
PS - I like movies, i just dislike a lot of them. Not cos i'm a genius or cos my time is worth a lot, but because good films make me feel all kinds of things, and bad ones feel like tortue (i dare anyone to watch Dogs of War).

Oops! Sorry, I didn't see you had written "Co-composer", which is arguable too, but since Badelt works with him, let's leave it at that. Anyway, you're right: Media Ventures seems to be taking over the world. Personally, I think Hans Zimmer has made some great stuff (two others came to mind: The Thin Red Line and As Good As It Gets) but I'm getting a little tired of the Media Ventures stuff.
Take "Kingdom of Heaven": Harry Gregson Williams composed a little music, and then filled the film with music from other films (like 13th Warrior, which had a great soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith). I find that disturbing. Also, I didn't like to listen to the same drum loop used in three different films: "The Bourne Identity" (John Powell, I like him though; he must be the best among Zimmer's proteg?s from MV, I think), "Man on Fire" (I don't remember, I think it was H Gregson Williams) and "The Constant Gardener" (Alberto Iglesias, not from MV, but he used the same loop). And the loop wasn't used mixed with many other things (except for the "Bourne Identity").

I was just thinking about how another week may be welcome. It is a complex compo afterall.
That sure is right...
I have a hard time capturing Atlantis's style in a song. I'm getting somewhere, but its still really hard. This extra week is more than welcome!
Good. I can compose almost only at weekends, so that's welcome.
This page needs a random, un-called for blurb...so here it is:
Damn "Once upon a time in New york", it's soooooooo long!
::)
What's "Once Upon a Time in New York"? A movie? I saw "Once Upon a Time in America" and "Once Upon a Time in the West", both by Sergio Leone, music by Ennio Morricione who, by th way, is Hans Zimmer's favorite and a great influence for him.
I will try to enter the compo. As I usually take months to finish anything and I have now only a few days, I have chosen my favourite style, baroque (which is probably the less popular one), so I'll send something in the vein of Albinoni or Vivaldi.

sounds cool! being a violinist i am quite familiar with vivaldi, and i am fairly familiar with the baroque period, i look forward to hearing something from you. (if you are pressed for time i guess you could always go for a bach-style invention... :) )
I might have to abort :(
I know, its weak and lame and whatever... but this compo is a real challenge for me and time is one of the obstacles that kills me atm. Next I have other projects to do of which making music is one. this means that I have to switch between music styles each time, which makes it really hard to stick with the song.

Oh, come one, man! It won't be as fun as it could if you don't participate! I work 44 hours a week in front of a computer and am spending the whole weekends in front of another computer in order to deliver an orchestral track. Why do you think I've disappeared for months? I bet you can manage too :D
Changing style between projects shouldn't be that difficult. A project is a project and another project is another project. Like we say in Spanish: "Una cosa es una cosa y otra cosa es otra cosa". Maybe you made the wrong pick. Perhaps Atlantis doesn't have a style so easy to mimic. You could try something easier, like Carl Orff's works for children.
Perhaps you're chickening out... :P (knowing you, this should work, he, he)

I have finished my entry, and send an e-mail to enter the compo. It is a very short Concerto grosso, just 4 minutes long. I have visited the page of the compo and seen only two entries there, but it is surely not updated. Anyhow, come on boys, send your entries!

Yeah, that's the one...
aw crap!
I thought my genius idea was original :( Well it was a genius idea anyway. And i KNEW i wasn't smart. doh!
I have a tendency of delivering my entry just before deadline. In most compos - and I think I'm not the only one.
I delivered first part of my diploma project 15 minutes before the time was due :D
I'll see if I can make anything for the compo though.
I remember cdnalsi's challenge. But it was a little different. It wasn't a compo, was it? He just challenged someone to mimic him and him to mimic that someone. Wasn't it something like that.
I just listened to rnceckel's entry :D
About that challenge thingy from earlier...
I do remember it. It got interpret to challenge others to imitate you if you knew they'd get a hard time. I for once did that with Benefith of the Boomerang. He made a chiptune, and I was going to make jungle. The only problem was that I failed in making jungle. Made 3 songs or so, and let him listen, but he didn't qualified it as jungle, and then I was like. Its not made for me. I made jungle lateron though, but that was outside of the project.
This project however lets you choose the style you want to mimic, which makes it easier.
What about the flowing...err? Wasn't that jungle-ish? I seem to remember it as a song far outside your normal style though there was plenty of "LPChip did that" in the song.
One more  yay

Chip, you have no excuses now. If you start making a track today, you'll easily finish it by June 14th. Unless you're not as fast as you claim to be, and, on the contrary, are as slow as a snail :P

Uh, well I'd really like to mimic Atlantis. I find it a challenge. I can do like most will probably do, mimic a style I've done so many times (for instance Purple Motion's style, or Beek's) but that is more like doing normal music. I can learn from choosing Atlantis's style, but due to my schedule, it became really hard.
Just to clarify a few things.
1. Your entry for the compo must not be a previously released song. But once you submit it for the compo you may release it. It wouldn't be fair otherwise cos the damn compo is already dragging for more than a month. :D Ironically i just emailed PPH about this today before reading his post :D
2. The judges are going to be the people who participate in the compo. They'll rate your song based on 3 things. How much they like it personally, how technically difficult the song is to create, and finally how well the song matches the chosen style. Style is most important of all, and it's all written in confusing english on the compo website
3. LPChip. Maybe you should try another style. Maybe a style of music you like? Other than Atlantis. Think of something you like, that may inspire you.
Thank you, georg.
LPChip, I always thought mimickin Atlantis's style was a terrible idea. I don't even know what his style is. After all, he hasn't released many tracks (I only remember Outer Worlds, or something like that). You should mimick something more characteristic, like I did.
I chose Hans Zimmer, because his tracks for action films and the ones made by his collaborators are instantly identifiable. I also thought about mimicking Mozart, whose style is really easy to recognize. Many people from the scene have identifiable styles too, like Gopher. Or you can pick an electronic band, like Kraftwerk. That shouldn't be so difficult.
I am currently working on a demostyle track for another project. It can be used here as mimic of Mike Oldfield. If I get it done in time (depends if I speak to my business associate in time) I will use that song instead.

Pity that Boomah and RedDevil aren't around any more. And where the hell is nofold/Goofy?
Quote from: "georg"Pity that Boomah and RedDevil aren't around any more. And where the hell is nofold/Goofy?
Red Devil quit the scene I believe, but he was only in because of Boomerang...
Boomerang however, is still active at CTGMusic.
I'll try mimicing Stevie Ray Vaughan. Whether I'll succeed is a question on its own - yet, I'll do my best.

Woaaa! Thats' quite a challenge!
Yes, and now you're making me extra aware of it. I also need to find a suitable lead sample. Well, I have to try at least.
You can always use samples of a clean guitar and use distortion effects to modify the sound. That will give you more flexibility with the sound.
Yes, I should be rather careful with the distortion I think. The thing is, quite some of his songs are complicated, or; got subtle solos, so I should try listening to some of the more 'available' ones and see if I'm able to emulate something.
No new entries? :? Don't let the World Cup make you lazy!
ftw, i hate music.
I've finished my song... Finally! :P

I've tried to mimic Mike Oldfield in between his earlier years and current work.
thanks :D

Great! Downloading :D
I have an entry--a crappy piano tune in the style of Ichiko Hashimoto's work for the RahXephon soundtrack, but I don't have an Internet connection I could use to upload it (I am at work right now D:).
I'll see if I can take it to a friend's place.
ok, stayed up late tonight and im almost done with my entry, ill submit it tomorrow (well, today since its after midnight). do wish i could spend some more time on it tho...
I didn't make it this time. I might try the idea anyway, but I'm all too late for the compo. It's too demanding for rushing it, and I have to rush it now if I'm gonna have a file to deliver. I look forward to explore the entries nevertheless.
i failed miserably.
ok, finished and submitted by email.

i hope more people finished tho... this is so small :\
maybe push the deadline back again...? -_-

Nice work! I like it...
I have no idea how Chopin it is though...
Only four entries? What happened, guys? It's no wonder people say the scene is dead :(
Quote from: "PPH"What happened, guys?
one day, music just started to suck.
someone send an internets line to mah hoos plz
hmm, what happened to georg?
I say: let's wait until music doesn't suck anymore to G?ran. :D
Quote from: "PPH"I say: let's wait until music doesn't suck anymore to G?ran. :D
Then you'll have to wait a long time. I'm not a woman changing my mind back and forth every fraction of a moment, even tho some say I sing like one. :x
Site updated, sorry about the delay i was away.
I wanna thank everyone who participated, regardless of wheter they made any music in the end or not. It's the thought that counts. Pity there wasn't more music, i guess it just didn't happen.
Maybe next time.
So we start voting? :?
And do I understand correctly that we also have to vote for ourselves?
Quote from: "LPChip"And do I understand correctly that we also have to vote for ourselves?
I don't think so.
I look forward to listen to the entries.
Yet - will there be another one? I think this type of compo has some potential. There are many interesting artists to mimic.
Quote from: "apple-joe"I look forward to listen to the entries.

It doesn't look like people find it easy to mimic other artists. That's the only reason I can find for the low number of entries.
I just submitted my entry. I know its late. Im hoping I am still allowed. I was delayed on a business trip. I chose Hans Zimmer aswell. ( Made my choice before knowing you chose him PPH :). I cant believe how difficult it was! I spent a LOT of time on this one and would have wanted more if I had the chance...
I thought I'd mention on the forum to everyone that I was late in case there is any objection from others that entered.
Best of luck to all.
Y
I say your entry should be taken. It's not like we have too many entries here :D

True. Still, people might have been busy with other projects too. Perhaps the chosen period for the compo was a bad period.
Anyway, I like the idea.
If I had managed to complete anything it would still have been more of a travesty than a pastiche. ::)
Well the 5 entries we got deserve the votes. Maybe voting will also make people more eager to enter such compos.
I'm waiting for your votes, everyone can vote! Noone has to. Contrary to what the rules say (hey if i make em then i can break em) but you cant vote for yourself. You will not be at a disadvantage because of percentage rules.
But vote! Get everyone to vote!! Maybe then Mimic 2 happens. Vote now!
PS - KrazyKatz you're in.
AGH!! They're all very good!
wait for me i want to upload my crap :( :(
and you are waiting for??
a) a bus
b) for Croatia to score a goal at the WC
c) an even LOUDER VST plugin
d) the Dodo bird
georg, don't get discouraged. I bet Croatia will beat Australia (literally, I have really bet that :D ).
And yeah, all entries are really good. Casting the vote won't be easy.
It has to be A, cause the other ones are impossible.
Quote from: "speed-goddamn-focus"It has to be A, cause the other ones are impossible.
 I was wondering who would take that question serious! :) Well I almost casted a vote too on that question
Quote from: "PPH"georg, don't get discouraged. I bet Croatia will beat Australia (literally, I have really bet that :D ).
Well you probably lost. Croatia allways has a few good players wich is good, a really bad coach wich is really bad, and a tendency to underestimate opponents who are not world class, hence they play well against Brasil but fail against Japan. This erratic performance makes betting on them nigh on impossible. I'm hoping the better team wins, i ain't no supporter anyway. And why bother? When the outcome will be Brasil 2 - Germany 0 in the final.
Oh, and Xaimus is the one with the anwser to the question. s-f was probably right, but if i remember correctly Xaimus drives a car.
yes i drive a car and C would probably be most accurate
also nevermind on the waiting it is unlikely i'll upload my ass track anytime soon :( :(
When'll the results be final?
im having a rather difficult time judging lp's considering i have no idea who mike oldfield is... can you give me some examples of songs to look for?
I planned to vote, but after listening through the entries, I gave up. Each track is great. How the hell am I supposed to decide on this.

"Amarok" is a lengthy song of Mike Oldfield's, aside from being the name of a really good music player.

This is his newest stuff. Its not entirelly like i have it, cus he changed his style... I hope you can make a good judge from this.

What? Rubbing salt in his wounds? Nooooo...
of course not

Yeah, I lost :( Anyway, it was part of a bigger bet on the whole first phase of the World Cup, which I would lose anyway :D
well, i listened to what is apparently an excerpt from amarok... (a 6 minute excerpt?? how freakin long is the whole thing??) rather weird, and didnt like it much... and i dont see much of a resemblance to lp's song... any other examples? i guess i could go downloading random songs of his off shareaza, but id like to get something from the right time...
Quote from: "Snu"any other examples?
The only songs I know by Mike Oldfield are Moonlight Shadow, Tubular Bells and In Dulci Jubilo, so I guess they're the most "well known".
Voted. It was hard. Very hard.
No, you didn't  and neither did Chip.
c'mon you guys... and anybody else who wants to vote.

What do you mean, I didn't? Didn't you get my e-mail? I'll send it again... :?
EDIT: Damn. I thought that scoring thing was just an example. This is harder.
voted, finaly
I also did. I tried to be a good judge, but every time I heard the songs I like them more, and the last one I've heard seemed the best...
Thank you all for your votes. I know it's hard. I scored each song as it was submitted to avoid having to do em all at once.
EDIT -
With early votes i can tell you that the song considered most complex is Hero. Subtle Powers and Nocturne share the lead for the most popular song, while almost everyone agrees the best mimicked song is Hero.
Surprisingly Hero is the overall leader OMG!1lol, while The Comeback and Nocturne are neck and neck for second place.
These results are unofficial, and there are still a few people who haven't cast their votes yet.
I haven't. I'm trying to do it today. By the way, I don't think you should reveal so much information when there are votes left to be cast. You may influence voters.
Nah. They're honest folk.
Besides they can't vote themselves up anyway :)
I tend to agree that its a dangerous idea to reveal so much... Whilst one cant vote for oneself one could be slightly biased when voting for others...even unknowingly.
Any Idea, when the results will be in?
Wait, I didn't vote yet! I'll do it now. But I'm having problems with Chip. I know "Tubular Bells", and I wonder if that's what he was mimicking.
georg, I know we are all honest people, but to have information can bias our votes even withhout us wanting it. Just a thought.
Any word on the results?
Comes christmas we may just have the results!
Too late to vote? Because I was finally able to decide for an order last night.
Well, georg has disappeared. I guess voting now won't hurt. I wonder whether something happened to him :?
OK, I might deliver the votes then.
*BUMP*
Ive pretty much given hope on getting the results here... rather annoying since I put a lot of effort into the piece I made. Just hope that the old georg is allright.
Quote from: "KrazyKatz"Ive pretty much given hope on getting the results here... rather annoying since I put a lot of effort into the piece I made. Just hope that the old georg is allright.
i havnt given up yet... im still waiting and checking the webpage periodically.
anyone know georg's email? have they tried sending something to him to find out if he's alright?
I think georg must have lost his connection to the Internet. Or something bad happened to him. I hope it's the first option. In either case, sending him an e-mail won't do.
Being optimist as always, I think that Georg must have got a new job and he has no time by now for this. But I hope he can soon return!

Counting some votes and posting the result is something that can be easily done on a weekend. I think something bigger happened.
I just saw a post by georg from November, which means he's alive. So, has the compo had any results?
Just saw the results in another thread. Got second, as always :D

Thats cool, I was pretty worried to be honest. You had a remarkable likeness in your piece. Definitely reminded of the Batman Begins style.
I was hoping to see you in the Time Signature Compo... Competition can only make you better.
Cheers

Well, I'm not sure I'll have much time. But I might try to cook up something.
QuoteWell, I'm not sure I'll have much time. But I might try to cook up something.
Dont bother, its over :). It ended up being cancelled for lack of entries. Seems no-one goes in for the tough compos.

He, he. Damn cowards, they are. :D
