Post by: Rakib on October 09, 2008, 21:22:37
Is it possible to change your username without the hazzle of creating a new account?

No problems with Rakib, but in a other forum you can change your username in the user control panel.

On this forum you can ask me, and I'll change it for you. :)

Send me a PM with your desired new nickname and optionally an email adres so I can send you a notification that the changes are made. If you don't tell me your email, I'll use the one from your profile. :)

Sounds nice, but at this moment I dont want to change my username. I was just curious.

But another question, is this forum using a special character map?
So if I wanted to use any of the characters from unicode, I could?

The forum is set to iso-8859-1 charset, so I'm not sure if it's able to handle unicode (it may work with entities, but that's up to the forum software).

I strongly discourage the usage of special chars in the username. Even if the browser does support it, the user might not, and that can lead to unnecessary complications. I don't even believe phpBB allows it. Atleast not during the registration phase.

registration would be the same as changin it in the admin panel. and as i've seen people posting japanese characters here, I do think that unicode works without problems.

нáxßøR91 or something would give me the creeps, i would personally be one of that users who is not supporting the idea =).

älskling is a special, border-line case, i don't mind cause we already have something like Tiësto.

edit: LOL Jojo, we always think about the same

I don't see any reason to allow ANY special characters*, I think users should make do with the numbers 0-9, the 29 regular letters of the alphabet and possibly an underscore.

*except those dutch admins

私はのちょうど基本的なセットとälskling同意する。
I agree with älskling, just the basic set.
Maybe some chars will work in a post, but registration of a nick is another procedure.
There shouldn't be any risk that different users see different interpretations of a name.
29 ?? Maybe a bit more, considering the ascii-set. Like BLØF or überhaupt.
I cannot check it now, but are those conditions for entering a nick present in the registration form ?

I can't see a setting for it in the admin panel, but then again, I can't find anything related to registration including registration itself in the admin panel either.

My point is, if you have a username that uses somekind of unicode that requires a font installed, not only will each page with your username trigger a "you are missing a font, do you want to install?" warning, but furthermore users will not be able to send you PM's because they simply can't enter your name in the box due to the missing chars.

I even estimate that if you miss the chars during a windows reinstall, or visiting from someone elses computer that doesn't have the fonts installed, you might not even be able to login.

His still a proud Opera 9.60 user of course, i went from that to Chromium Nightly a month ago, or so.
But LP is referring to his split personality  that takes over his body on the regular, daily job =). He is using IE there with many other browsers to test his codes. Also, i can tell you that on many "official" places are still just the IE available for browsing the net. LP was surely referring to those ppl, that are bored on workplaces, and cannot stand to go home before checking the modplug forums and comment some of the recent topics there. ;)

@älskling:
You've made my day, i waked up with a huge a lol. =)

Heh - at work, I installed the nightly build of Firefox (codenamed "Minefield"), and enabled the TraceMonkey JS engine, which is the new one in development. It beats the pants off, well, anything, including Chrome. I could then brag to my boss that I'd increased the speed of our web app by at least 50%! :D

Is that so, bvanoudtshoorn? =)
Will test it right away and check, how's it fitting my needs.

Make sure you enable TraceMonkey. There are instructions on this site (http://blog.ramin-hossaini.com/2008/09/09/firefox-31b1-tracemonkey/). Oh, and none of your addons will work. :) But it sits quite happily alongside a normal Fx installation.

Edit: Put in a better site. :)

I don't need addons. =)
I'm using third party applications for mouse gestures and for adblocking example, so i can share every setting i make on all browsers.

For some little time after testing, all i can say is: Oh my! :o, their new javascript hack is speedy. I miss some of the Chromium features from the Minefield, but i like the idea of having smoothscrolling, full zooming, not just text zooming. I hate that is taking a lot more desktop area that Chromium, but i'll c what can i trash from those toolbars and buttons. Hmmm, overall looks promising.

That's why its cool to have these features cared by third parties =)
I could not live without mouse gestures also.

I had a go playing with mouse gestures. But then I couldn't be bothered, 'cos my mouse has got a couple of extra buttons which I use for the most common commands (like back/forward). And I have both hands on the keyboard probably around 80-90% of the time, anyway. :D

You should add FlashBlock to your list. :D

Which programs?
Sometimes I need IE for compability issues, but I hate all the ads. If I could get rid of that I'd be happy.

Is it me or was this topic about changing your name? :P

Anyway, Yes I'm an opera user, but am limited to IE6 at work unfortunatelly. Although I have admin privleges on my pc and thus can install anything, I am forced to work with our intranet site which runs on MS Sharepoint, and indeed, its not compatable to anything other than IE :P

Yes, I'm screwed. Although I can mimic the look and feel in Opera quite well, a secondairy application we use doesn't work at all. It has somekind of secure java login box which just doesn't pop up at all in opera. That basically prevents me from using it entirelly.

Oh, and the missing font message is from windows itself, not the browser X)

I dunno... I think my cat jumped up the desk, moved my mouse to open notepad, then jumped hysterically on my keyboard so the words "Don't forget, it was about usernames" appeared on the screen.

Yes, yes... I hear you thinking: Thats impossible. I guess I indeed don't have a cat

Perhaps it was the topictitle... or a dream. Yeah, it was a dream about the topic title

I don't have chinese or japanese charsets installed, but i don't get a notification anyway :P I never got one with firefox, to be precise. only with IE in the old days... And Sam posted some strange characters here, so that was the ultima test. :P

Username ? I wasn't warned, because my cat isn't allowed access to the studio.

Strange chars ? No more strange than the example of psishock in some kinda cyrillian : нáxßøR91
It's just a babel translation of the line under it into Japanese.
A while ago I found out that most forum scripts do show these things.

Quotethe missing font message is from windows itself, not the browser
I expected that. FF is capable to show quite a lot of unicodes, when present in a HTML-page :
http://www.louigiverona.com/webarchive/samzen/download/unicode_list.7z
(This is also a browser test. To show what one is supposed to see, I've included screenshots)
