I use Celemony Melodyne to analyze an aeolian harp sample. You get to see and hear the result of their "direct note access" though an aeolian harp sample is a special case since most of what you hear are harmonics of the note the string is tuned to. You may find it an interesting exercise, I did so I thought I'd share.
