Title: Web Browsers
Post by: Really Weird Person on April 13, 2006, 18:44:02
What Web browser do you use? I just installed Mozilla's Firefox today to see what it is like on a PC. It is definately weird. It does not appear to do frames on my site //caleb.dnsalias.com/caleb (& it looks weird). Unless I am imagining it. Firefox also seems to be faster than Internet Explorer. Firefox has replaced my Internet Explorer browser also (@ least it did in my Start menu). I am not totally sure of the answer to the poll, due to the fact that I have not used Firefox much (considering the fact that I just installed it today). Correction, my page does not have frames. I thought that it did, until I looked @ the source & did a search for frame & another 1 for frameset. The find could not find frame or frameset. The problem must be in the source somewhere. I do not, however, know where. The source must not be set up for Firefox, it must be set up for Internet Explorer.

Are you sure your code is correct then?

Test it with W3C's HTML Validator at http://validator.w3.org/
Though Internet Explorer doesn't care about bad HTML code, most browsers do.

If you compare pages WITH validated code you'll see that Firefox and Opera displays the pages much much better than IE.

Wow, that's weird. That section of the W3C's Web site looks strange. I had not seen that part of it before. It's a Web site that checks other Web sites' sources. That's weird. I wonder what would happen if someone (especially themselves) put their own URL in the URL box? That would be weird. Oops, I was thinking of ModPlug Tracker! I tried to go to the end of this message using Control Alt End instead of just Control End!

I use Opera almost exclusively.

Actually, I've tried it. And it just confirms that their own page is indeed following their own rules of HTML coding. :)

Do they say that just because they do want 1 of 2 things to happen.

1. They would have to delete their own Web site.
2. Someone else (maybe their boss (Their boss? Aren't the leading Web page of the Internet? That's weird)) to delete their Web site.

Well they do define the standards...

and from me, you have another vote for the non-listed opera.
opera 9 beta is super sweet, and faster than firefox.
there also is another reletively popular browser for osx, safari i think?

website compatability issues are annoying, my website has a weird bug with the dhtml menus, they pop up in different places with different browsers... and im really not sure why, and havnt taken the time to dig through the code yet.

I do not recognize the Opera browser. Does Opera block pop-ups automatically like Firefox? Does it have the tab feature like Firefox, too? If it has those 2 features, I might consider downloading it (although, it would probably take some getting used to, just like Firefox did). Is Opera newer than Firefox? I will add it to my poll. Maybe I won't, too. I cannot edit the poll. That's weird.

www.opera.com , tho i would suggest the opera 9 beta at: http://labs.opera.com/downloads/
opera had those features before firefox.

popup blockage is optional in firefox. I tried Opera a few years ago and i liked it cos it was better than IE or Netscape but it was... hmm, not very good? I kept wishing some things were done in a better way. then i tried firefox and i got my wish.

I think all browsers these days block pop-ups. More or less efficiently.

Opera has the most efficient one in my opinion.
Too many popups slip through Firefox' blocking.

Internet Explorer does not have it built in, but I think that Opera & Firefox do.

If you want to tout who came first with certain features, then go the way of the Squirrel and use NCSA Mosaic. May not be the most up to date browser, but it came first

It does if you're using XP SP2

I would agree that Opera is faster than Firefox. It also shows mini versions of the tabs when you hover over them with your mouse! Firefox didn't do that!

I just looked into Opera, and it's not free. I don't trust them anymore. Although I use Firefox, to me it's far from perfect. I am using 1.0.7 (with no themes, plugins or extentions), and everytime I try to upgrade, whether its to the next one up all the way to the latest, firefox refuses to startup after that, even in safe mode. Luckily I keep the 1.0.7 installer on the HD so i can instal over the new version everytime I try to get it working and it fails. Any ideas guys? Win2K Pro here....

Opera is free? It isn't open source, but it's free.
Until about a year ago it was shareware though.
It's just the versions for some of the non-Windows platforms that still aren't free.

And well, Opera was one of the first browsers too. Not as early as Mosaic, but as far as I know, only one or two years later. And it had tabs from the beginning. :)

Man, whats the point of tabs? Whats so hard about having multiple windows open? Tabs take up space, valuable space being taken up by tool bars and status bars already. I always open links in a new window. External ones atleast. But then I have lots of mem, so I can handle it.

Did you visit opera.com (http://opera.com) or some freaky download site?

Personally, I think that the tab feature is pretty nice. I do not really like having a cluttered toolbar.

Yeah that's quite cool!
As you perhaps guessed, there are extensions for Firefox to do similar things. I particularly like Reveal (http://aluminum.sourmilk.net/reveal/), which shows you thumbnails of all tabs when you hit F2, as well as thumbnails when you hover over the back and forwards buttons.

Every time I use Opera I'm pleasantly surprised. It runs at least as fast as my extension-free Firefox profile (which I only ever use for debugging extensions), and has way more functionality... but unfortunately not all the functionality I have now grown dependant on through many awesome FF extensions. I'm willing to sacrifice performance for stuff like super up-to-date autoupdating Adblock filters, the Webdeveloper plugin with its live CSS browser/editor and HTML element highlighting etc..., the Document Object Model inspector (essential for learning to do cool javascript tricks), Venkman the Javascript debugger (also essential), dynamic textbox spell checking with Spellbound, StumbleUpon goodness, custom Javascipt injection via Greasemonkey, restoration of all windows and tabs, including form content, when relaunching the browser thanks to Sessionsaver, undo close tabs with Tab Mix Plus, XUL and all its potential, HTTP header intercepting and editing with Tamperdata, general tweakability through about:config and the list goes on and on and keeps growing.

i dont know much about all the other stuff you said, but opera has both of those, and also the about:config.
adblocking is the one thing i wish opera did well, tho its recently been added to opera 9, and there are plugins that do it.
