SoOn is sponsoring a competition in the spirit of the Scene compo tradition and to make it a bit more interesting we'll buy you a beer (or two) if you end up in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place.
1st place prize is $20
2nd place prize is $10
3rd place prize is $5
Here are the rules:
1. You must use at least 10 seconds of one or more of the 10 samples provided. This sample must be identified (via text). But.... You can time shift, reverse, transpose – do anything you'd like in any software and throw it all together in any style with any additional sounds you desire. Do something glorious – make a mockery of the contest – it doesn't matter – whatever is best wins!
There are samples at this profile
http://www.traxinspace.com/profile/2009sooncontest
Or at this URL
http://2009contest.soonlabel.com
2. Prize payment will be made via paypal – that is where I have the money for this event stored. If you can't get a free account then I can't help you.
3. A minimum of five (5) entries are needed to trigger payment of the prizes.
4. Entries are open until 23:59:59 October 31st 2009 GMT
5. Voting starts 00:00:00 November 1st 2009 GMT and ends November 7th 2009 GMT
6. Voting will be tallied by Tricky on TiS. Send him a TiS PM or submit your vote by emailing 2009vote at soonlabel.com which will be forwarded to him. His decision of the winners is final.
7. Entry URLs will be posted to this thread by the entrant or Tricky or myself. Email 2009vote at soonlabel.com with your URL if you do not have or want a TiS account.
8. SoOn members are eligible to compete – only I can't since it's my money and that would make little sense.... Wouldn't it?
9. I'd like to thank all of the SoOn members who contributed samples for the contest
I think that covers it.
OR
here is the sample pack plus instructions

What about the samples that are less than 10s long? :)
Sounds interesting! I might start on it a go when I get back from my holiday.
you got me on that one - I guess you have to use more than one - or... repeat it!
and... I had a typo - just need to ID the sample by text - I used... A or B or whatever.
It would be interesting, clones, but here in this stupid country we can create PayPal accounts just to make payments, not to receive. Still I may enter just for lulz, for I have something in my sleeve :D
Nahkranoth,
Yes I knew some people would be unable to receive the prize. At one point LV said he had the same problem.
I truly apologize for that. The only other solution would be for me to snail mail something and I didn't want to promise exposing my real street address to strangers. For an acquaintance I might work out something but I can't promise that.
It would be great if you would still participate!
I'd recommend to stay away from snail mail. I guess people enter such contests just for fun, not for the money (at least if considerable amount is not involved). Oh man! I just made a big mistake promising to participate, it should end with an epic fail for me now LOL
Judging from the collaboration you posted I'm betting an entry from would be formidable!
Thank you, clones, but remembering my previous promises to enter the compo I've got a little scared :D I hope this time my mouse and motherboard will behave themselves  In this case it will surely be ready for October!
Since this has been asked a couple times at other forums:
you can use anything else with the sample(s) in any style you'd like using any combination of addition samples, performance, VSTi, buzz machines, etc. Maximum creativity is the goal and the SoOn samples are used to wrap around the compo.
if you do not post your entry on the traxinspace you must email the link to 2009vote at soonlabel.com in order to have either Tricky or me post it at Traxinspace for you.
If you need hosting for your song I can provide that.
Of course - you can post your tune where ever you'd like and drum up as many votes as you'd like.
ANYONE can vote - just PM tricky at traxinspace or use 2009vote at soonlabel.com
Announced the compo at louigiverona.com
It would be good if the rules of the compo were written somewhere on the page of SoOn, so that it would be more clear to people. When they see rules on a forum post, they are less likely to get interested. At the moment the organization in my opinion is a bit vague - go here, write to this email, go to this site to submit... too many resources for one compo if you know what I mean and many people from outside might not want to register at modplug, then TiS to just take part in a compo.
Thanks for the announcement LV.
And whoops.... I did forget to post it at SoOn - heh!
It is on the front page now.
http://www.soonlabel.com
or without the splash page
http://center.soonlabel.com
Again - thanks!!!!

Yeah, I have to change the link from pointing to this forum to the SoOn page - otherwise even if someone from my site does come it won't register.
Done that )
thanks LV!
You should enter a tapeloops composition!!
Okie, I will do that )
Hey LV - look at this - someone is apparently doing real cassette tape loops.
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Making_Cassette_Tape_Loops
they don't say what they are used for.
Imagine a concert with 20 portable cassette players that the performer physically turns on and off - the sound captured by microphones (or I guess headphones out from the deck would work).
it would be akin to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSulycqZH-U
and this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=453zupHVV9c
Quote from: "uncloned"they don't say what they are used for.
They do if you click on tape loops (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tape_loops)
ahh... ok.
I was waiting for a snippet in the article.
This is all very interesting. I am actually getting an 8 track tape recorder from my friend soon. But for the contest I guess I'll use my Tape Loops )))
I helped! :> there are some neat samples!
excellent!
I already made a draft version, using Linux Multimedia Studio :)
first entry!!!
From the renoise forum by jonas the plugexpert
almost finished my track
Edit:
Finished it
Can be found here:

I used most of the percussion/fx samples and cut up the resonating sample. and layered them in

I sent my entry to the 2009 soonlabel email.
Don't judge it too harshly, it is my first complete track made in Linux!
Hi LV - I think your entry is fantastic!
I received your email this morning and responded. Not sure if you received it. I did have some questions.
1 you want me to host it? No problem there.
2. What SoOn samples did you use? My guess is the percussion, keyboard progression, and field recording from europe.
And thanks so much for the entry. I'll post a link in all of the forums as soon as I get home from the Russian deli here. :-)
Louigi Verona has submitted the 2nd entry to the $25 2009 SoOn Compo
http://clones.soonlabel.com/public/2009-SoOn-contest-song-hosting/3009_2_final.mp3
It is called Somewhere in 3009
And this entry used the percussion, keyboard progression, and field recording from Europe samples.
Yay! I am very happy you liked it!
Yep, I used those samples )
Hope more entries come in.
A third entry is in, and again it is from the Modplug forum - and is also fantastic! I love the harmony vocals!

A fourth entry just came in:
From the Renoise forum by Eat Me called "Used All Of The $35"
Song Info: http://www.electrobel.nl/muzik/1538/EatMe__Used_All_Of_The__35
Download MP3: http://www.electrobel.nl/mp3/1538-eatme-%20Electrobel.nl-EatMe+-+Used+All+Of+The+%2435.mp3
Play in browser: http://www.electrobel.nl/flash_mp3.php?song=1538
I have used only samples from the remix pack. Cutted out sounds from the sound fx, added volume slides to piano, keys,
bass guitar, conga and that other drums. The beat is distorted low passed from the music, the piano clickclaks also.
The guitar solo is left intact, except for the loop at the end with fading in distortion. The field recording is in the
background. The track was made with a registered version of Renoise 2.1, using the internal effects and free VST effect
freeverb2.
I take it one artist cannot enter twice? What if I enter under Ashwood? =)
Well, I didn't consider if someone wanted to enter twice.
Since there is money on the line it wouldn't be fair necessarily.
But I understand that people want to have fun and I am NOT policing this competition in any way shape or means. I'm not for instance demanding proof of sample use - and if you get your extended family to vote for you... well I guess good for you.
So my suggestion is that anyone who wants to enter more than once do so with an alias I am not aware of.
Got you.
Btw, I do not see any way of you transferring any money to me anyway - Russian segment of PayPal presently at least does not allow to receive money. That is, in case I do win something )))
well, even if you can't get the money - by winning you prevent someone else from getting it. and if from a 2nd account... not sure that's fair.
A fifth entry has been received - so the prize money is officially in play!!
Screaming Egg Notion said:
Heres my entry from the abyss...
Had a mad musical block lately... I think this got me going again tho...
http://www.traxinspace.com/song/44807
And for people not on TiS I've posted it here as well.
http://clones.soonlabel.com/public/2009-SoOn-contest-song-hosting/screaming-egg-notion---erm-bubbles.mp3
So far, with these 5 entries, I find the content of the contributions of a common high level of quality.
Each in their own habitat.
So I will focus on more trivial things, like the envelope of the song, panorama, and efficient length.
And things like 2 Eat Me : It's not done to add an URL in a filename..
It just looks like 'over-promoting', while tagging can have this info.
Okie, I will not submit a second song. After all, if the prizes are in play, then indeed it would not be fair.
A sixth entry is in by Zan of trax in space called Breaking the Broken
It can found here at trax in space http://www.traxinspace.com/song/44811
Or here for download from SoOn
http://clones.soonlabel.com/public/2009-SoOn-contest-song-hosting/zanbreaking.mp3
Zan used the Europe field recording and feedback leads in a minor samples.
A seventh entry is in:
Likuid has submitted I'll be there SoOn (3:37 minutes of memories)
I use these samples:
1.Ben field recording from Europe
2. Chris feedback lead in A Minor
3. Alpha alpha Keys
Done in 2 hours... My new boy (6 days) and my older girl (18 months, hehe) didn't let me time to composing...
http://clones.soonlabel.com/public/2009-SoOn-contest-song-hosting/likuid---soon-contest.mp3
PS - congrats on the new baby boy!!
Nice tunes for this The 2009 SoOn Compo, isn't it ? Good quality ! :)
Jeez, I'll never finish my ALMOST finished track if someone will post his/hers music for the compo again!
why is that Nahkranoth?
Sometimes comparing the song to the others can kill the mood, you know :D But I'll finish it in time, even if the whole track has to be less than 2 minutes.

ninth entry is NF
@Sam - NF?
Sorry, Not Found
I don't know how... I clicked on both links and it works for me.
It doesn't work for you??
do you get a 404?
Sam,
My provider is having problems - they are on it. Thanks!
Of course I tried only the MP3.
I was vague. It was not a 404, but the connection stayed fixed in a waiting state.
Now I tried again. Got the DL dialog after a minute, but then speed was extremely low, so I cancelled.
Then the next time, all went normal. So maybe it was just a busy moment.
well, a friend in France also had trouble reaching the site at the same time. But people in the States could reach it (I had a friend and myself check). The host support team knew about it - so perhaps it is cleared up now.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Me, I live in France and I had no problem to download MP3 tune of Xerxes. Moreover, it's an excellent tune ! I like it very much ! Great work !
Thanks jikoo - I believe they cleared up the problem about an hour or two after Sam's post.
actually, the track is by ceekayed, not xerxes... :P
Ooops ! It's true ! thank you Jojo.
just to give this thread a bump
Less than a week to enter your composition into the contest....
And 2 days or so until mine will be ready. I'm glad I finally managed to finish it, it was giving me headaches :D

This download link sux, FF can't handle it, caused by the dreadful brackets.
Never mind, This forced me to register at TiS, to DL the file anyway.
@Sam
A better alternative might have been to paste the link in your browser address bar.
But you are right - this doesn't work .... at Modplug
I checked CTG, Modarchive, United trackers, and renoise - all work
But Buzzchurch doesn't work ether.
So here is a tinyurl version
http://tinyurl.com/yjakakk
Shame TiS doesn't take ogg - I'd love to see your music there.
Nice, I use tinyurl often for bitmaps, but I didn't know it does audio as well.
TiS doesn't take ogg ? Conservative losers I would say..
Little chance to get my music there. This was my first encounter, and I don't like the attitude.
"the top of the charts" .. "fun competitions" .. not my piece of cake.
I wonder if anyone comes to the contest page from louigiverona.com?
Now this is for the site that hosts the samples on SoOn.

So its up to 150+ potential competitors - and it is looking like 10% are going to enter - unless there is a mad rush at the end here.

No serious composer takes the TiS charts (or ratings or reviews) as more than a tea party social nicety. And... TiS hasn't sponsored a competition that I've seen. Barry and Novus had sponsored compos but those stopped some time ago.
It would be fair to say that Mysterium styled the new TiS to reflect the old 90's TiS and *most* of the composers have grown up in the intervening 10 or so years. A lot of that fluff and feel good bullcrap isn't wanted by people though there still are cry babies and idiots to be sure. At one point the forum was totally out of control around late spring, early summer 2008.
Hi,
I made a little piece with OpenMPT for the compo. Due to lack of time it's very short, but short can be nice too I guess. :)

Thanks for the very nice samples !
Sure I can host it - and thanks for the new entry!!
I would recommend making an mp3 since more people can play those files its to your advantage. But you don't have to.
Here's the mp3 :
A_la_source.mp3 - 2.67MB (http://www.zshare.net/audio/67576852f2acf24c/)
By the way, is it possible to export as MP3 directly in OMPT above 56 Kbps ?
EDIT (after reading the next post) : thanks LPChip for the link, all questions answered. :D

Just to ensure we're not going off-topic, see this post: http://forum.openmpt.org/index.php?topic=2119.0
If you have questions, please ask them in that topic. :)
Paul - this place wants me to install a plug in to download the file.
I'm not doing that. I will PM you my email address - please email it to me.
Thanks,

No problems with the DL of the ogg version here.

And here I go!
Nahkranoth-INT -1d10 (http://download.modplug.com/uploads/files/1256721468Nahkranoth-INT%20-1d10.mp3)
Used the field recording and feedback solo samples, you'll clearly hear them.
Can't tell the genre and the name is kinda odd as my INT is making jokes on me. So the name should reflect my drained mental state I guess.
And of course as I said earlier it is Ultimate Epic Hard-to-Listen-to Piece of crap I've ever made.
Waooow excellent track Nahkranoth ! I love it !
I listened to all entries. All is very good ! Great work !

Thanks, jikoo! And everytime I hear your tracks I envy you in a good way :D I must agree that all tracks are very good, tho I think I've missed some of them. I hope there will be some page with the complete list so I can get them all.
BTW have you noticed the sound of an image loading from tape? It's a picture from the speccy game "

And a question to

Should I send an email with the link now, or something? Can't put my thoughts together for a couple of days now, sorry for stupid question if it is answered already somewhere
7. Entry URLs will be posted to this thread by the entrant or Tricky or myself. Email 2009vote at soonlabel.com with your URL if you do not have or want a TiS account.
I have 2 more entries at TiS also to add.

at this point, no.
The MP3 tag for the song is not filled out and I took my best guess. Not all forums allow editing posts. I'm sorry.
I should add that the current name is to your advantage since the ID3 tag is not filled out.
Quote from: "uncloned"I should add that the current name is to your advantage since the ID3 tag is not filled out.
Strange, because my foobar shows the title, artist, year and comment filled
Maybe it's because my tag is ID3v2? Nevermind, let it be this way. Thanks for the response
To defend Nahkranoth, XMPlay as well as the Winamp MP3 plugin (which I use in XMPlay for writing ID3 tags) show artist and track name info.
Defend?
I right clicked the file and chose properties. My guess is those programs take it from the file name?
Anyway since its hosted on mod plug the file can't be changed by me and reissuing the link will only cause confusion. While I was able to catch Paul's ogg vs mp3 I can't catch everything being human and all.
Quote from: "uncloned"Defend?
oh, excuse that i'm not an native englishman, but i can't find a better word for it.
QuoteI right clicked the file and chose properties. My guess is those programs take it from the file name?
No, XMPlay and the Winamp ID3 tag editor both check the ID3v2 tag, which is a common method since more than ten years now.
QuoteI right clicked the file and chose properties.
I assume that you are referring to the Windows explorer. I wouldn't trust anything in its property dialog, as I don't even know where it's getting its data from. It would appear that it can't read ID3v2.4 tags in that case. If it can normally read ID3v2 tags, you could check if it also reads ID3v2.4 tags by exporting a little file in OpenMPT 1.17.03.02 as mp3 - it will generate ID3v2.4 tags.
I whole heartedly apologize for any confusion or problems especially to Nahkranoth.
@ Jojo
Yes, I was using Windows 7 explorer - to be honest Jojo when it comes to something being used by lots of people (like hopefully Nahkranoth's composition) the lowest common denominator is probably best. As a case in point I have been using MP3TAG to embed pictures in my mp3's - but my car SD card / USB driver radio transmitter refuses to play them past about 20 seconds or so...
@ Nahkranoth
Please accept my apologies - my goal was to get the music posted before I left for a job interview in another city (this I knew was to be an all day and part of the evening affair). I was surprised to have 3 entries this morning and now I wish I had waited on posting yours. I do not mean to have given you a slight.
If it is any consolation this is what Black Tiger said about your piece on the Traxinspace forum "Njah! Nahkranoth is too good. ;D"

Thank ye,
clones, knowing this I finally can get some sleep :P
(hm, some posts bypassed me, while writing this)
XMPlay shows your ID3v2 tags as well.
But even if a forum allows editing posts, it's useless to change the filename in the post.
(or one might have FTP access)
If one wants to change the ID3 tag, one has to upload the song again.
2 Clones :
Looking for file properties with exploder has nothing to do with showing an ID3 tag.
This extended content will be read by a dedicated player or an app like Audiodata.
2 Nahkranoth :
Now at least you should call it : "Ultimate Epic Hard-to-Listen-to Piece of Crap" .. :)

Well, I personally don't know any people (apart from you) who use this dialog to actually view ID3 tags. It just looks like M$ refuses once again to follow a standard here.

(Streaming)

(Download)
http://www.ozanyarman.com/files/music/Sabastorm.mp3
This new piece is called "The Saba Storm". Catchy, huh?
The scale employed in the composition is that of the Saba maqam, or else a Yarman-36a subset for the scale of said maqam. The 12-tone subset scale chosen from my notorious Yarman-36a tuning is given below:
Yarman-36a Saba maqam with perde rast on C
12
!
148.23705
198.74659 D
347.40794 Eb (quartertonal)
381.44577 Ed
501.35622 F
649.32179 Gb (quartertonal)
699.74399
801.68275
896.75720 A
1001.88049 Bb
1079.85183
1200.00000 C
Don't be surprised if the established theoretical models (Turkish, Arabic, Persian, etc...) fail to faithfully represent maqams. You need something like Yarman-36a to render maqams like Saba, Ushshaq, Huzzam and Karjighar satisfactorily.
In the piece, I warped the Congas.mp3 sample by Norm Harris. It's hard to recognize, because the waveform has been reversed and processed with carefully chosen Logic Pro 8 plugins:
1-SpecGate: Dark Super Energy
2-FuzzWah: Crunchy Overdrive
3-EnVerb: Rolling Up
4-SpaceDsn: Modula B Delay & Hot Plate
5-Limiter
Notice how the original Conga beat is transformed to an ethereal Saba aire in the background, which seemlessly intertwines with the "Saba-ishness" of the composition. Who would have guessed that the inharmonic spectra of congas would be so suitable for maqam Saba? The pitches of the congas match delicately with the Yarman-36a Saba subset.
Due to the limitations with the chosen scale (Logic Pro does not allow on-the-fly tuning changes), modulations are very limited. There is a savoury modulation to Ushshaq and later to a diminished Segah pentachord as the piece progresses. But Saba on D dominates throughout.
The length of The Saba Storm is 5:10 minutes. The size of the mp3 file is 3.9 MBs.
And yes, I am the one who sings the "gazel" vocal in Turkish. If anyone wonders what the words mean, just ask me!
This is my first true attempt at electronic microtonal maqam polyphony.
Comments are welcome!

Quote from: "Louigi Verona"I don't drink beer. Will you buy me Fanta or Coke?
Sure! Question - is Coke in Russia made with high fructose corn syrup or cane sugar? In the states it is made with the corn syrup and many people treasure the Coke from Mexico which is made with cane sugar.
I'll research that question in great detail if I win )))
OT: I would guess that Russian coke, like here in Sweden, uses sugar from sugar beets.

Second place is Freaks we are by dj Alces
Third place is Behind The Sun by solo
All data including the actual email votes for the contest can be found here:
http://2009contest.soonlabel.com/contest/
There were a large number of irregular and duplicate votes - all involving Saba Storm.
However removal of these votes did not change the 1st place position.
The next time I do a contest... IF I do one again, a solution for this will be found.
In the end all votes that followed the requested format needed to be honored.
I will contact the winners for distribution of the prize money.
Chris
My apologies to you Nahkranoth as that your entry was pushed out by these duplicates. However blame my inexperience in running something like this. 10 years ago I would not have entered, let alone sponsor, a completion.
And I doubt I'll do this again. While Saba Storm's author didn't cheat by the rules I set out my suspicion is that the people who voted for him didn't listen to any other, or perhaps, any song at all.
Please do not be after me for some change - I have been agonizing over this for a week - as soon as these duplicate votes started to come in - and the author of Saba Storm saw nothing wrong with it - by the rules I set out he was right.
the problem is I made an assumption- that people voting would actually *listen* to what they were voting on.
So let him have the money and whatever prestige. The real winners are the contestants left after Saba Storm and the duplicates are removed.
I do not think there is any need to dramatize this. I have held compos myself and I can say these things do happen. Next time just figure out a better way to find a winner. There are actually several good methods available.
This was a good compo which motivated a lot of people to do stuff. A compo from Soon in the future would surely be welcome.
I doubt you know the PMs and emails I have received. I didn't realize how people would try to influence and take the rules out of context. It really has been a frustrating experience.
Also I doubt the 2nd time around would be as successful nor will I have the money to put up for the prize.
Next time: Have a compo without money in the prize.
The recognition is more than enough if the challenge is interesting.
I thought it was really motivational, thanks a lot for all the trouble !

I think a really nice compo would be : create a < 64Ko track with OpenMPT featuring all the effects and settings of the mptm format.
Then the first place winner could have his track added as a demo into the next update of OpenMPT. No money, but good for the ego
Well, this compo was certainly good for the ego of Mr Yarman. He must have a big family..
I read the .RTF file and got quite irritated.
He means that it's 'understandable' to vote for himself ! Disgraceful..
Never mind, it's about the music, and the quality of this compo was pretty high.

Some of the extra features actually take up so much more extra space that you would be better off with a conventional .IT file (using compatibility export). Well, I actually did a tune in 64k (zipped) for the Evoke 2009 music compo....

As for money thing - indeed, I agree. Money as a prize perhaps is not such a good idea.

Well, the whole instrument extensions and plugins take up "a bit" of space, but they also exist in raped XM and IT files of course.

in a nutshell:
- parameter control notes
- multiple sequences
- user-defined tuning

Great track, and easy to understand for learning purpose. Effects can be easily spotted and recognized in the sound : SB0--SBx replay, Qxx retrigger, channel copy + FEx detuning or Oxx phasing (is it the right word ?).
Always nice to be able to look into other's tracks !
Uncloned, I know I didn't participate or voted in the compo. But I just wanted to add a thank you and a little something about the hassles of running the compo.
Some people tend to forget their ethics when it comes to money, no matter how little the sum. You did alright! Just relax and know that the community appreciates projects such as these.
About taking the rules out of context I am thinking about the extreme lengths some user agreements go into... My thoughts are these: if someone by purpose interprets rules in a way that wasn't meant the intention of the compo, the compo-admins should be able to just boot said person.

Quote from: "Louigi Verona"In Russia it is all very similar, like borsch.
Hey, we're all Slavic peoples! :D
That settles it! I'm learning how to make Borsch! I mean...just look at it! It looks like the perfect bowl of soup/stew! Is it generally considered a "hot" dish? I know you get cold borsch as well...but does it create heat or a cooling effect for the body? (yes I come from those places where the concept of `Heaty' and `Cooling Foods' are common)
Btw - Im loving this thread! Domestic, Mundane and OT it may be ... but damn its fun to know how so many diverse ppl, around the world no less, bring their common and distinct cultures in one place, all of them bound by "the one tracker!"
Whoops! I actually thought I was in G's `Hows the weather?' thread, I STILL think its cool to learn about other places this way!
is salo a fish or cheese? hard to tell from the picture.
and Varenki look like perogi - love perogi.
The Borsch looks like some Polish Hunter's stew I've had. -Is it pork based?
Never heard of Kutya before - so I found a recipe:
To the Ukrainians Christmas is not Christmas without Kutya, a ritual dish and an integral part of the Holy Night Meal, is served only during the Christmas cycle of holidays which ends with the Feast of Jordan on January 19. The origin of this dish goes back to days immemorial when the early Ukrainian ancestors first cultivated wheat. A relic of customs practised three thousand years before the Christmas era. This dish should be prepared several days ahead of of time for flavour to develop. It keeps very well in the refrigerator for 2 weeks or so. Kutya is high in nutritional value and should be eaten any time.

As an aside - at a place I worked at in the late 80's started to do random drug testing of all employees (thank you Ronald Regan) - and not just any testing - since they were a big company they could afford to do GC-MS which is very sensitive. Well they found what they were looking for... a 60 year old maintenance man was accused of smoking opium. It scared the bejeebers out of him since it would mean no retirement if he was fired and he kept on failing drug test after drug test. As it turned out he ate poppy seed coffee cake every morning for breakfast which was very popular in Chicago with its large Polish population.
Even though I live in the US both sides of my family were eating the food and speaking at times the languages from their origins in Europe. So I eat large amount of Lithuanian and Polish food and still do eat some. I'm cutting back though because I'm sure it kill me early. I don't do nearly enough of the physical work that goes along with the diet to render it healthy.
Borsch is soup which is based on beet (that's why it's red). You can have meet there, but not necessarily.
Nahkranoth: Didn't know you were from Ukraine! =))) I lived a long time in Ukraine. It is a pity our governments are now behaving themselves the way they do.
Quote from: "machinesmith"Is it generally considered a "hot" dish? I know you get cold borsch as well...but does it create heat or a cooling effect for the body? (yes I come from those places where the concept of `Heaty' and `Cooling Foods' are common)
It's a hot dish, but in hot summer days I used to eat cold borsch as well, but it is unlikely considered a cold dish, I'd call it perversion :D
Quote from: "uncloned"is salo a fish or cheese? hard to tell from the picture.
Salo is salted unrendered pork fat. Quite tasty with garlic or onions.
Quote from: "uncloned"and Varenki look like perogi - love perogi.
I guess it is the same. It can be stuffed with potato mash/cherries/mushrooms/cabbage, depends on imagination :D
Quote from: "uncloned"The Borsch looks like some Polish Hunter's stew I've had. -Is it pork based?
It's more like soup but with red beet and preferably with a lot of meat (pork is the right thing), but there can be no meat at all (but then its nutritious qualities are kinda doubtful)

LV: Didn't notice your post somehow [EDIT] No wonder, you posted right before mine [/EDIT] :D Yes, I'm from Ukraine, as you can see under my avatar
Not sure about Russian government, but ours is a herd of greedy dumbasses, which already robbed/sold everything they could. Поэтому наша страна сейчас в глубокой заднице, и это закончится только тогда, когда "секция пулевой стрельбы" будет "принимать заказы от населения", цитируя неизвестного классика  Or we'll wait for 2012 :D
Where did you live BTW?
I lived in a very small town called Снежное. It is a coal mining city, I think. Lived there when I was a kid for two years, went to kindergarden there. But then we moved back to Russia. My grandfather is Ukranian.
Somewhere near Donetsk then? Well, never even was that far
Mmmm.... dunno. Gotta look it up on the map to be sure.
