Too bad I sold my Casio WK-1200 so I cannot brag owning it here :P It was an excellent synth for its price but it was too ugly, I had to choose between my wife and it... Well, it is soon time for an upgrade. Also had Edirol FA-101, which was truly great sound card but I didnt need 10 i/o anymore so it had to go as well. Current gear:

Speakers:
Audio Pro Black diamond

Headphones:
Old Technics (needs an upgrade)

Sound card:
Alesis IO|2 USB interface

Mics:
Shure 58

Other:
POD guitar amp modeller, Fender Stratocaster (US), 7-string Fender Stagemaster, Peders semi-acoustic steel string and a Jackson custom

Good point mentioning Sound Card, I'll edit the original post to include it.
My sound card is the M-audio 24/96

@ seventhson

Could you give your opinion on the pluses and minuses of the KRK RP-5s. Do they give a solid enough bass response for only having a 5 inch woofer? Have you had the opportunity to test them against other monitors in the price range?

@ dBlues, you must have a great wife! some folks would've made the alternate decision :)

This is the situation in my studio :

~ PC : Win2000 SP4 651 Mhz - Soundcards : SB Live ! and a simple SB PCI.
~ Monitoring : two identical small stereo sets around the screen. Positioned according to my 4 channel concept.
~ Amplification : A switchbox can choose to connect the outputs to the hifi-system at the backwall. 4 cheap 100 W speakers positioned in the same way, driven by 2 regular stereo-amps.
~ Mixing : Left on the desk the selfmade inputmixer, 12 in 2 out, plus a section with 2 in (line or mic preamp) 2 out.
Instruments :
~ Right table : The modified EMS Synthi AKS analog synthesizer.
~ Left table : 3 Casio SK-1 sampler keyboards. 2 of them are modified into one case and interconnected, the Twins.
~ Foreground : A laptop, W98 600 Mhz, with it's own amp and speakers, used to play live with OMPT.
~ Microphones : non-descript types, just for the occasional sample.
~ Headphones : the same type. Not used while composing, just for the occasional singer dubbing a track.
~ Out of sight : Audio system in the livingroom, next to the studio, is connected to the aux-input of the SB Live! card.
So I can record from an audio-CD, FM radio, TV, VHS player, or gramophone.

Sam...I hate you.

Not really, of course, but my GOD, what I'd give for your studio!

Monitor Speakers:
Nothing, really. Logitech ZX-something or others...

Headphones: Samson RH-600s. Not bad, cheap, but good. Sometimes touchy on the treble

Sound Card: Creative Soundblaster X-Fi XtremeGamer. Only because Dell didn't offer XtremeAudio...or whatever the option was...=/

Sequencer / Keyboard: Roland HPi-7 digital piano. E-Mu Xboard61 USB Midi controller. Currently circuitbending a Casio CTK-481. Reason 3 and MPT.

Mics: 2x Behringer C-2s. Cheap, absolutely gorgeous sounding mics for beginners.

Mixer / Pre-amp: Alesis MultiMix 8 USB. Very nice USB mixer.

Other: Voice...lol

@ LPchip

I use the AKG-K240M headphones since they're a studio standard for like 30 years and renowned for there honesty in sound reproduction. But I'm inclined to know what your K-271s sound like. Are they that old school speaker-like sound, or do they have the modern silky-sound approach. Do you find them overly strong in certain frequencies or lacking  in some?

Cheers!

Here is my absolutely massive equipment list:

-HP Pavilion5250 Laptop computer with stock soundcard
-Paradigm bookshelf speakers (in desperate need of reference monitors)
-Realistic 150 watt amp (ancient history and crackles and cackles like a witch)
-1 no name 12 dollar microphone
-Sony MDR- V180 headphones (not accurate in the least)
-2 cucumber sandwiches
-5 cups of tea
-1 brain with a few musical ideas
-a 1954 rudge whitworth bicycle
-issue 1 of Star Trek: TNG "The Gift" in mint condition (DC comics 1990)

Obvioulsy, Modplug Tracker is my audio program, and I use many many vsts and vstis, so I have a tonne of software effects and instruments, all of which are freeware, no shareware or purchased products.

Actually, the K271 is the sequal to the K240. They sound nearly alike, except that the K240 goes down to 20 hz, and mine goes down to 16 hz.

EDIT: and a tiny detail, the ear shelves are slightly larger I believe.

You sure you not talking about the K-240S? They're supposed to be the sequel to the K-240M. Ive had a brief listen to those and they have a very similar sound with a lightly enhanced bass reproduction, and I think a hint less bright.

When I bough the K-271 Studio, the man in the shop let me listen to a K240. I told him that I wanted the K271 explicitly, so it was ordered from germany. That man told me the difference.

The Xtremeaudio isn't even a proper X-Fi card anyway, it's basically the Audigy SE, no acceleration whatsoever, and X-Fi features are doen in software.
The Xtremegamer isn't that bad a card, well, apart from the fact it's a creative card..

I knew Sam was actually the wizard from OZ.  :D

Sam, you'd think with all those interesting and expensive gadgets you could spring for the ergonomic chair. A buckskin on a fold-out makes me envision one dude with a monster backache.   :D

Not that I can say much, I purchased a metal fold out myself, but instead I go totally bare back.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My setup is pretty straight forward.

A $10 chair.
A $20 composite wood desk. (thank you Wal Mart)
A moderately fast computer. (I've had for about 3 years)
A 22" wide flat screen LCD (just got)
$50 Philips deskstop speaker system (just got)
MODPLUG TRACKER (latest test version) (had since the beginning of time)
Lotz of VSTi's and samples. (I have my sources)

And a sick, inconsolable mind. (thanks Mom)

Coffee helps on occasion. (where would we all be without South America?)

Ive been heavily exposed to music since I was in diapers and I can tell you with all certainty and conviction that the real equipment is what ya got on the inside.

2 Matt
The only expensive thing is the Synthi, for which I had to pay the loan for years, and I don't consider it a gadget.
The rest of the stuff is second-hand or self-made, so quite cheap.
Those things I already owned before starting with pc-tracking, so why throw them in the bin ? Better add the potentials.
And you're right. The only tool that really counts is the mind.

Are you guys sarcastic or what ? I don't understand. It's a bunch of limited old crap and selfmade things.
No professional speakers, mixers, soundcards, or microphones. No MIDI gear, no fast pc's.

Yes, of course I'm the happy owner of a vintage analog synth, but it also has crackling pots and switches in the meantime.
By the way, information about it can be found here :
http://www.louigiverona.com/webarchive/samzen/synth/synth.html

I just happen to be living on my own, so if I move into a new home, I immediately declare the livingroom as the studio,
and do the living in the kitchen.
OK, I can flaunt about the fact, that there is a Roland TD6 electronic drumkit too, parked by a friend, to use in jamsessions.

And I forgot some tools. The brain also needs power, so there must be some booze around, plus certain herbal products.. :)

Personally i'm quite happy with the RP5s.

Plus: -Clear,neutral sound
       -Non fatigueing
       -Not too expensive

Minus -lacks a little in clarity when it comes to the lower frequencies         (But you could fix that by getting an subbass speaker i think)

But i have to say that i didn't test them against other monitor speakers,so there may be better speakers around in the same price range.
