Title: Barryvan Compo: Round 6 Begins!
Post by: bvanoudtshoorn on March 31, 2008, 06:34:11
Space Walk has won the first round of the Barryvan Compo. His entry, "The Depth" (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo/getFile.php?type=entry&id=21) narrowly beat Nygen Dale (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo/getFile.php?type=entry&id=19) and Nahkranoth (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo/getFile.php?type=entry&id=20)'s tracks. Congratulations, Space Walk! And thanks to all the other entrants, too. There were some really hot entries.

The Barryvan Compo is changing.
I think that a two-month turnaround is just too long. So I've changed it to a month-long compo: two weeks of entries, and two weeks of voting. Once again, entry is open to anyone who's interested for this round. Check it out at http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo). This month's inspiration is a photo taken by Karloskarmi (http://flickr.com/photos/karloskar/40790049/):

You can write whatever you like around this image. (Thanks to Novus for the suggestion to use a photo!)

I hope to see you all there. And once again, congratulations to Space Walk!

Man! That's a nice repeat! On this photo I can clearly see some water, and a bunch of jumblies in a sieve :D
And I really like how you changed the look of the site.
Maybe it's not right to say it here but I voted for aGp on 1st place cuz he's the only one who have read (and maybe understood?) the poem right (as for me). Aww, now I'll go babbling about the past. Forgive the old fool :D

LOL! I didn't even think about the Jumblies in a Sieve connection! :) Oh well.

Glad you like the new look of the site. :)

Voting is open!

Three very, very different tracks are competing for your votes in this round:

- Sam_Zen's sounds derived from the bitmap (http://tinyurl.com/5jj2yz);
- Space Walk's Secrets of Maya (http://tinyurl.com/5mzhp9); and
- aGp's No Way Back (http://tinyurl.com/5b27at).

Download 'em by using the links above, or head over to the voting page (http://tinyurl.com/5adb5k) and read what the artists have to say about them, then cast your vote!

It's sure to be a close competition, so make your vote count!

The results are in!
In an incredibly close set of results, Space Walk (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo/getFile.php?type=entry&id=25) has just managed to nose into the lead with 16 points, followed closely by aGp (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo/getFile.php?type=entry&id=26) (14 points), who is in turn followed just as closely by Sam_Zen (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo/getFile.php?type=entry&id=24) (12 points). Congratulations to all three!

Round Three Open!
Round three is now officially open! The inspiration this round is actually a short extract from a piece of music - Bach's Little Fugue in G Minor (BWV 578). You can do whatever you like to this - remix it, use snatches of it here and there, mathematically derive stuff from it, anything! It's an inspiration, not a restriction.

It's available as an image (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo/getFile.php?type=file&id=1), a MIDI file (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo/getFile.php?type=file&id=2), an MP3 (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo/getFile.php?type=file&id=3), and an IT (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo/getFile.php?type=file&id=4).

Happy composing, and be sure to get your entries in by the 15th of May!

thank you for your unnofficial vote nahkranoth ^_^ im hoping u remember and have time to enter and vote next round!
two weeks off school meant i had a bit more time for writing :D

and btw barryvan, if this is easy to implement (don't bother if it's not :p) then i think it would be pretty nifty for the artist's to see the voters' comments (kinda like the soundevotion compo, but maybe only show the comments after the voting deadline because results are influenced by them imo) as feedback is always very good.
Title: Barryvan Compo: Round 6 Begins!
Post by: bvanoudtshoorn on May 02, 2008, 22:47:46
Nice idea, aGp. When I have time, I'll put in an extended view of each set of results, which shows the full inspiration and the (anonymised) comments. It's all sitting there in the database... :)

BTW, I've fixed the RSS feed now - for some reason it wasn't working before, so it should be easier to keep track of what's happening with the compo.

Honestly, I wanted to enter and even began writing, but I ended just copying the whole damn thing and I can't add nothing more no matter how I try. That fugue is so beautiful I even don't want to. Perhaps 15 days is not enough for the compo? (for me?)

Due to popular demand, I've made the entry period for the contest three weeks, and the voting period one week. This means that for round three, the deadline for entry is now the 22nd of May.

If any of the entrants so far would like to resubmit their entries, they are free to do so - just send me an email.

Site to upload was hacked again so I present my second submission here.
It's again a mix of bitmap to sound conversion plus samples with the module format.
The bitmap source is a modulation too of graphic material.
The composed sound can be found here (http://www.louigiverona.com/webarchive/samzen/download/oggs/bvc3_fuga2_4_mix.ogg)

Thanks S_Z. I've amended your entry in the database to use your updated file and description. Is the title still the same, or would you like me to change that?
Title: Barryvan Compo: Round 6 Begins!

It's not meant to be an updated file, but as a second entry.
The title of the first one is "Fugz", of the second one "Fuga 4".

Oh, I see. Unfortunately, I can only allow one entry per person, Sam_Zen. :( So you'll have to choose which one you want to enter. Let me know which. Sorry that I didn't make that clearer to start with.

Post by: Sam_Zen on May 20, 2008, 23:15:41
Yep, me too, but come on friend, you can do it.. :)

3 weeks isn't enough for a serious, finetuned production most of the time.
So one could consider the entry as a basic sketch, a raw model, a maquette of the real building.
Title: Barryvan Compo: Round 6 Begins!
Post by: Nahkranoth on May 21, 2008, 08:56:20
What a week! Yesterday my PS/2 died in the middle of work. It seems easier to buy a new USB one today than to fix that crappy port. That's why I'm definitely gonna miss the deadline this time. I'm not asking for more time, it's just an excuse for myself for not being productive :D
So I decided to put off this track for some time, maybe it is better that way. It's the fate people.
Title: Barryvan Compo: Round 6 Begins!
Post by: LPChip on May 21, 2008, 08:58:29
Barry, maybe you should extend the deadline to another full compo time, so people have twice as much time.
Title: Barryvan Compo: Round 6 Begins!
Post by: bvanoudtshoorn on May 21, 2008, 10:24:39
@Nahkranoth: Oh, that's sad to hear. :( I hope you get everything sorted out.

@LPChip: I think I might go back to the original two-month period for the compo from the next round (although perhaps with six weeks of composing and two weeks of voting). If that still fails to attract enough entries, I guess I'll have to close it down. :'(

People just seem to be less interested in compo's.

I was thinking for a way to solve this problem, but I guess that doesn't really help for your competition.

Anyway the idea is: you have a compo and ofcource someone wins. The number 2 and 3 can get a second chance in the next round, so you always have 2 additional songs. If you miss entries, you could even add more from previous rounds.

Perhaps you apply a formula to those entries: eg. their votes will get only 80% weight.

Also you could have the ability to allow for multiple entries by one person with optional their choise which one weights less than the other.

So when they submit 2 songs, they have to specify which one goes for the 100%, the rest weights less. If that song gets better votes, then its bad luck XD

That way, Sam_Zen can have his other entry for this round, but votes for that song will only weight 80% which gives it less chance to win, but if its really good it could still win.

Example:
Song A who weights 100% gets 5 votes
Song B who weights 80% gets 11 votes.

11 * 80% = 8,8 votes.

That means that Song B would win it from Song A.

If however Song A would have 9 votes, then Song A would win, even if song B has 11 votes.

Post by: bvanoudtshoorn on May 21, 2008, 13:09:40
Hmm... That's quite an interesting idea you've got there, LP. Although you're right - it won't work on themed compos. :( But I like it. Perhaps MPC should start a scene-wide compo based on this idea - something to fill the void left by the Novus compo, perhaps.

In terms of implementing, it wouldn't be too hard (within the framework I've built up). It's just a matter of implementing an interface so that when it's asked to retrieve songs / votes / whatever it does it according to your specifications... (http://sourceforge.net/projects/barryvancompo for a not quite up to date version.)

I wonder if there'd be interest in such a compo.

Edit: Entered.  Not entirely happy with it, but it'll do (=
Title: Barryvan Compo: Round 6 Begins!
Post by: Sam_Zen on May 21, 2008, 23:56:58
The construction by LP looks nice, but Barry's right, the re-entry of previous ones doesn't fit if the compo is scene-related.
And aGP has a point too. Yep, why no adding an entry yourself, Barry ? :)

A variation of LP's concept about a second entry from one author could be, that the author defines own entries in a certain order.
So f.e. the 2nd entry is A, getting 100%, first entry is B, getting 80%.
But I keep some doubts about this validation. If I enter a second entry, I don't do this to increase my chances of winning.
It's just, that I have a second idea of how to deal with the material.
As soon as a piece is published, it's the song that scores, not the author.

OT: About the term "compo". Before I found this forum, I used this word as a short one for 'composition'.
Then I found out that on the MPF the term was used to indicate a 'contest'.
So now I'll have to be aware of the difference.

Thanks Barry - but I just entered to try to bulk up the field for the compo.

Considering there were only two entries it is a well.... mild acomplishment.

But it IS the first compo I have ever one. So now I can say I won one.

Barry - any idea if the review compo is still alive?

I saw that promise for the winner of the next round but Tricky has yet to answer my question about the round I won.

It actually would be an interesting excercise to be reviewed by people on this song because I did't expect Water Will Flow Everywhere to be of real interest to anyone but me.

Damn, when it will end? Gotta stop playing with those synths and make something worth keeping :)

Practising is always neccessary for developing your technical expression and quality, you will feel when you are ready to make something worthwhile for your expectations.

...and most of all, sound engineering is fun! =)

2 Barry
New additions available, so I searched for them. To apply a vote.
It was a while ago, so I first checked the basic URL http://www.barryvan.com.au/
I was not able to navigate to a part with the compo contest.
After some digging in my archive I came up with http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo/ to serve things right.
But  the link to "Entries so far: 2 - Read more..." doesn't work (Firefox running).

Heya Sam_Zen. You won't be able to vote until the 12th of September, I'm afraid - I like to collect all of the entries before I open up voting. That way, people who enter at the last possible minute aren't disadvantaged. :)

And sorry about not having a link on my www.barryvan.com.au website - I've corrected that now. There's now a news item about the competition, and a link under "Other" in the menu. Thanks for pointing that out!

Transport by email is only an emergency solution, because the attachment will increase 50 % in size due to coding.
So still better to look for an accessible free host on the web, so you'll just have to mail the link.

Well, quite difficult, 6 quite different tracks is a lot to judge.
As music , I like the track by DeeJyoo maybe the most, but I don't see any connection with the compo theme.
It's a pity for the resolution, that the choice is only upto the third.
Voted.

Sorry for the late notice...

Official Results
1st Place - DeeKyoo - Cross the line (20pts, 6 votes for first)
2nd Place - LPChip - Enigma Intensity (20pts, 3 votes for first)
3rd Place - Clones - Enigma (15pts)
4th Place - Nahkranoth - Kadath (14pts)
5th Place - aGp - She was an enigma (9pts)
6th Place - Sam_Zen - Var plus (6 pts)

It was an incredibly good round this time. All six entries were phenomenal. You see, running this compo is purely selfish - I just want to get good music out of it! :D

Congratulations to all the entrants, and especially DeeKyoo and LP, who managed to equal each other in points. DeeKyoo takes the win, though, with more votes for first. As you can see, the entire competition was very closely fought. Congrats and thanks to Clones, Nahkranoth, aGp, and Sam_Zen as well.

The next round will begin soon, once I've got everything finalised. Here's a hint, though: "If you go down to the woods today..."

Round 6 Begins!
For round 6, the inspiration is a classic children's song - "If you go down to the woods today". :) It's available in a whole bunch of formats (IT, OpenMPT, MIDI, PDF, PNG) on the competition website (http://test.pbc.wa.edu.au/compo), so head over and start writing!

Dates for Round 6 (tentative)
Entry period: 30th September -- 10th November
Voting period: 11th November -- 26th November
Title: Barryvan Compo: Round 6 Begins!
Post by: Nahkranoth on September 30, 2008, 13:01:16
I think LPChip is the winner, since DeeKyoo's track has nothing to do with the inspiration. Just wanted to say that.

[EDIT]
I can get no (ta-da-da...) Inspiration! (ta-da-da)... :D
I just can't download them. Maybe Barry just uploading?

If I would go down the woods today, I would find large areas of cut trees, to make plantations to produce palm oil.
To feed the fuel engines of SUV's.

EDIT
Couldn't download either, except for the shown picnic bitmap.

Links work. I think it's a bit poor to have a bitmap with the note-score as source for inspiration.
This is more a prescription than an inspiration.
Title: Barryvan Compo: Round 6 Begins!
Post by: Nahkranoth on October 01, 2008, 08:43:09
It's just a graphic representation of the music. Since those notes mean nothing to me I rather have my inspiration from the sound. Gladly there are multiple sources to listen to. And it already worked for me - I feel more than inspired   Can't wait to finish the daily routine work and put them notes down in tha tracker :D

How do you mean, Sam_Zen? It's the same technique that I've used in many of the previous rounds... I'm not trying to prescribe anything - I just want to represent the inspiration in as many different ways as I possibly can, so that it's as universal as possible. In other words, I want people who can't read notation to be able to see it in a tracker/sequencer, and those who don't use a tracker to be able to listen to in an MP3/MIDI file, and so on. :)

@Nahkranoth: I'm glad that you're already feeling inspired. :D Can't wait to hear what you come up with.
