It's slow in rendering, but the quality is sweet, and it has a super complex procedural texture/material scripting engine (you can make other scripts for it too).

I'm quite surprised (sorry if I overlooked) to see the absence of XMPlay (http://www.louigiverona.com/webarchive/samzen/download/xmplay3305.zip) here so far. It's a versatile player for all kinds of module-formats, with a lot of info-data showing. Even patterns are showed.
It can also save as Wav, included the playback-settings, as MPP can.

icoFX (http://icofx.xhost.ro/) is a free, yet powerful icon editor. I've seen many icon editors before. those which had the same great features were commercial apps (i liked IconCool, but it's very buggy) and those which are free often are just very basic. this icon editor is free and professional: multiformat icons, extracting icons, nice drawing tools and many more things are top-notch.

@Jojo: Have you also looked at the Gimp for icon editing?

i really can't stand gimp's interface and IMHO specialized editors for icons only often work better than those designed for other formats.

Notification:
In the course of time I placed a lot of links in all kinds of threads on this forum to files to be downloaded.

I believe that the source code for one of the older versions was used as an example to implement MPT's VST support, but I'm not sure how much code was directly copied.  Besides, that was a much older version and the program has improved significantly since then.  Also, I suspect many of the newer users might not have been aware of the program.

That is a good point, Jojo. Free software, unless I am mistaken, would likely refer to software that comes with a free trial download. Freeware, however, is software that you do not have to purchase a license for and it costs you no money.

One piece of freeware that I am fond of is Stomper by Zap. It's an older drum synth generator that had a lot of potential. Unfortunately it's been collecting dust for years and is not without it's bugs. I'm looking for something a little more up to date, but have yet to find anything quite as useful. It's mostly for making analog drum sounds; although it can also make some super crazy noises (usually before crashing).

It's a granular synthesis studio: you open various samples, set tens of options and envelopes and play it or export to a file, or play with the app live and export a live recording! It can make great sounds if used wisely—I used it unwisely, and still got some! :D

Runs on Windows and OS-X (maybe Linux with Wine too?). It's stand-alone—but surely you can generate many long samples and use it in favorite sampler plugin or so.

Combined with things like FLAC and Opus, and with solid packaging of multiple modules into one block, it might be possible to create a successor to the MO3 encoder, or to host your own module archive (exclusively using lossless samples) should a certain site go down again.

Brotli is useless for modules. It is specifically targeted towards HTML/JavaScript compression and won't perform much better than zlib/deflate on binary data like modules. There are much better zlib replacements which Rich Geldreich discusses on his blog (http://richg42.blogspot.com/2016/01/zlib-in-serious-danger-of-becoming.html). In particular, BitKnit would most likely perform better than Brotli, and if you want to trade speed for size, there's of course always LZMA and its variants. I don't really think it would be worth the speed dent to use LZMA for compressing module data though, since this is by far the smallest portion of a module anyway.
There is currently simply no reason to replace a proven-to-work library (which is needed by OpenMPT anyway for existing formats) with a new library for a minimal increase in speed or size.

Oh. Well, that's a shame :/

@monsterovich It seems you've added a MIDI port with some magic there. Do I need to use some other software to do it, and how? Your app deserves more attention from the community (and more documentation as well ;)) I've uncommented the lines in launchpadd.ini and replaced the setting with miditest, but at the time I have default Windows GM synth deactivated, so I couldn't test if the server receives anything, but I believe so, and anyway it's cool.

P. S. Oh, I've been wrong about the docs, now I found the wiki. Will read.

P. P. S. Now at least I've configured client & server to play sounds at their own without MIDI. :) Cool indeed, but unfortunately latency is too high. Is it possibly my Wi-Fi?

There is always a possibility. To decrease the latency I even tried to connect my smartphone to PC directly through the wi-fi-spot and had a good success (use this scheme: laptop - host, smartphone - client, otherwise you will experience major lags due to bad hardware on your smartphone). There is another way - just use the lan cable for your PC, it always works without issues.

I have found a fork of Timidity++ called Timidity++ 41, it is an experimental build of Timidity++ and it has the ability to use sfz's and dls files as well as sf2's and gus pats and it is available in 64 bits for windows 10 x64 and 32 bits for older versions of windows, it also has the ability to emulate many different midi modules including the MT32, they have also ported the twsyng system synth to 64 bit for windows 10 and it is included.

Here is a good piece of free software called Resource Hacker http://angusj.com/resourcehacker/ (http://angusj.com/resourcehacker/), it is for editing (decompiling and compiling) software resources such as dll's, exe's, etc. With this software you can change the icons, splash screen and about screen graphics of OpenMPT to your own personal tastes, for instance maybe you prefer the old ModPlug/OpenModPlug icons and graphics or you have custom versions that you want to use, with this software you can make such modifications. You can also use it to do the same for other software as well. It is perfect for people who don't know how to modify and compile source code, but want to change graphical elements of a piece of software.

Note: This software is freeware but not open-source.

I have found free binaries of Ardour 6.9 for windows that someone uploaded to the Internet Archive at https://archive.org/details/ardour-6.9.0-x-86-64-gcc-5 (https://archive.org/details/ardour-6.9.0-x-86-64-gcc-5), I'm assuming that they are full version binaries and not the crippled demo version. AirWindows VST plug-ins.

Lots of good VST2 Plug-ins with no GUI. 

Drum samples in WAV formats.  Snares, kicks, and hats.  All very good quality.

Rickenbacker bass SFZ and Renoise Instrument is available as well.  Some really good bass sounds in here!

Cardinal Modular Synth

Cardinal is a free and open-source virtual modular synthesizer plugin, available as CLAP, LV2, VST2 and VST3 audio plugin for FreeBSD, Linux, macOS and Windows.

An open-source file compression program I wrote is called BWTC32Key available here (http://b3k.sourceforge.io), and its files have a .B3K extension.

Also, an open-source music program I recommend is JummBox. One of many reasons why I like it is it having chiptune versions of the GM patches. Of course, I did a FOSS sf2 of it (here (http://stgiga.itch.io/jummboxsoundfont) or here (http://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts/2722)) (It's under CC-BY-SA4, which is GPL3-compatible. Said SF2 actually pairs great with OpenMPT.

Also open-source VST plugins in my opinion are something I find to be more likeable than black box VSTs for which no code is available, so if an architecture or OS change happens, you can't use those plugins. With an open-source VST, you can recompile them if something changes.

I know VLC can play tracker music and its somewhat the player I go to. Its not much but it does work, there's also classic media player hang on

Thats freeware not open source / free(libre) software. But after using it, to check out the functions at least its not photoshop

This thread is not just about free software as in "libre software" but freeware in general. There's nothing wrong with posting things that aren't libre.

I had already stated in reply that it was 'free' but not 'open'. Open meaning open-source software which would roughly translate to the 'libre software' definition...

Looking back through I see a billion posts of 'FREE' but not 'LIBRE' soft. So the pointless post by Allenwrench was what...He just landed on this thread & had not seen other postings?

Seems like there should be a pin about this to prevent such drivel. As this leads to a member being indirectly subject to the 'Do not harass, insult or provoke other users' rule as I was a receptor of all 3 & this could be used as such a tactic of a member that 'dislikes' another but wants to not go too far in the harassment department as to be banned...

Chasys Draw is brilliant and not one I've come across before, so thanks for pointing that one out. Well worth having piece of software.

2024 Update:

In December 2023 on a backup computer (long story, my data is safe), I released an improvement to UnifontEX that fixes bugs and adds features. (A Sample Text field, the DFONT version now has vectors too, the WOFF1 version is now smaller thanks to DEFLATE improvements, and the JSTF table was added, which in the process fixes Winamp and JPEXS SWF Decompiler not allowing the font to be selected due to missing some tables, and on that note, some of the tables in original Unifont came back when I added the JSTF table. It's the only safe addition. Believe me, I've tried.) Basically, this update is an improvement to the compatibility goal of the project, in the process being a feature upgrade. Also the Sample Text is "One font to rule them all!" (A LOTR reference and a reference to the high compatibility, down to character count.) Hopefully you enjoy this update. It took a month to release because computer troubles.

Some nice free software I would like to recommend is VSC, a good code editing software, and Blender, for 3D modeling. Enjoy!  ;D
