Title: Looking for high-quality weather sounds
Post by: Kitsune_Phoenix on May 16, 2014, 23:36:48
I am looking for some high-quality (16-bit, stereo and preferably in a high sample rate) weather sound effects that I can use as samples... things such as rain, wind and thunder. I need these to create some atmospheric tracks for something I am working on.

you can find some, not always high quality but useful, for example:

http://www.zenambience.com/fr/ambiances/ (http://www.zenambience.com/fr/ambiances/)
http://www.universal-soundbank.com/ (http://www.universal-soundbank.com/)

download the free ones or record the audio input streams.

As "advertised" on the Top Picks site that can be found in OpenMPT's help menu, http://freesound.org/ has pretty much any kind of sound effect you could possibly be searching for.

I remember a very good vst called nature, that you can find in KVR, that in fact was composed of several VST's, among them "rain", "wind" and "thunder", that were quite realistic

Alright, I will take a look when I am on my laptop. (Typing this from my phone right now.)

P.S.: Are there any ways to compress multiple existing songs into a single package and have them share samples with eachother to save space? For instance, having hundreds of separate modules but having them delete duplicate samples upon being inserted in the archive to reduce the size to under 10 megabytes?

I know that the entire Metroid Prime soundtrack fits in only 6 megabytes, but those aren't tracker modules and would thus be incompatible with ModPlug.

Outside OpenMPT, you can use something like the 7Z or RAR format with solid compression. Compression formats that support solid compression will most likely be able to see the redundant sample data in your modules and can reduce their size considerably.
Otherwise, you can use OpenMPT's "append module (http://wiki.openmpt.org/Manual:_Module_Merging)" functionality from the file menu to combine several modules into one. However, this will not automagically merge identical samples/instruments into one, so you will have to do that manually. Some module players (e.g. XMPlay) will be able to identify and play individual tunes within a single module file (aka "sub songs").

Oh, neat! One of my friends actually told me that Smirftsch over at Old Unreal is actually working on adding both RAR and MO3 support to Unreal through an external OpenAL plugin, so this information is really great to hear.
