Title: [OT] Desktop Screenshots (last one, I promise! :)
Post by: Squirrel Havoc on March 03, 2006, 01:52:24
Sorry Chip if I am flooding your forum with useless goof-offery (http://www.rodent-revenge.com/blog/goof.txt), but I really wonder about this one, and it's not too personal.

This is where you post links to a screenshot of your desktop. If you have more that one OS, then why not post a shot of all of them?

Remember, don't embed the  image in your post, that will annoy everyone. Just links.

Ok, here is mine: http://www.rodent-revenge.com/blog/screen.jpg

Yes I know my Desktop is messy, it's my Temp/Documents area :)

Just for fun, here's my old FreeBSD/KDE desktop right after I installed it 2 years ago: http://www.rodent-revenge.com/blog/snapshot1.jpg

I'll post a grab of GNOME/Linux later when I am booted into it.

If you mean the desktop to be the screen after a boot of the system, i would be this :
The screen as empty as can be (http://www.louigiverona.com/webarchive/samzen/pixz/desk1.png)
But if you consider the 'desktop' as being the starting or central point for the work, it will be :
The environment of Total Commander (http://www.louigiverona.com/webarchive/samzen/pixz/desk2.png)

That's a clean desktop you got there. This (http://www.rodent-revenge.com/blog/working.jpg) is what it looks like when I'm working. Not much going on, but then I don't have much RAM

here's a shot i took last night: http://www.snuq.com/temp/screenshot.jpg
the left monitor pretty much always looks like that, the right one is everything else (winamp vis, opera, modplug, file browsing, games, etc).
yah, i know thats an incredibly random playlist, heh.

Holy poopie, what vis plugin is that? And please don't tell me its AVS, it doesn't work on my PC for some reason. I usually use MilkDrop for vis

Here's me in Linux/GNOME: http://www.rodent-revenge.com/blog/screenshot.png

Nothing special really, but for those who have never seen Linux or GNOME, it's a pretty OS/GUI :)

heh, i never take a shot with my desktop icons visible, because the entire screen is full of random stuff (i pretty much use my desktop as my 'unsorted' folder).

and btw, my taskbar is at the top of the left monitor, and on autohide.
i seem to be the only one who likes to do this...

My brother likes autohide, and I used to, but I missed things like flashing buttons and other notifications

Usually when I work, my desktop looks something like this:

http://lpchip.com/sharing/desktop%20mpt%20hl2.jpg or
http://lpchip.com/sharing/me_using_mpt.jpg or
http://lpchip.com/sharing/mpt_sxp_sl_w.jpg <- that was a bug bytheway, which was my own dumb fault :P

I made a few earlier with my actual desktop... Need to find those pics, so I can show them.

PS. 2 Squirrel Havoc, Its okay. Good way to get some movement going around at the forums. :)

EDIT: Okay, I've taken a screenshot of my current desktop and uploaded it. http://lpchip.com/sharing/mydesktop8.jpg
An older one is here (was taken cus of the picture, so icons removed) http://lpchip.com/sharing/mydesktop7.jpg

(bytheway, both images on mydesktop7 and 8 were made by me. :)

What were you refering to? I didn't notice anything wrong. But I did notice you used Polyphase sampling, while in the old forums, you mentioned XMMS was the best. Which is it? I want the best, and I use XMMS.

BTW: Am I the only one with a hot chick as my background? I feel like a perv :)

As I understand, Polyphase is generally better, but it also depends on the samples you use. Trust your ears.

No.

Don't we all?

I find skins.be (http://www.skins.be) to be a useful resource for desktop wallpapers.

Why does your desktop not surprise me? Only thing running is a high quality audio program :)

I notice you use ATI graphics card too, do you ever have sound problems because of it?

I sure do. My MOTU 828mkII FireWire doesn't like my Radeon X600 Pro running off the PCI-e bus (it loses sync and beeps when using high sample rates and with disk activity going on). I hope the Apogee Rosetta 200 I'm looking to get in the coming weeks/month will fix the problem, else I might have to upgrade my computer too.

I don't think it's because of having an ATI card though, is it? I always thought it was the PCI-e bus stealing all the bandwidth. Maybe I need to configure something in the bios? I'd much rather get a Rosetta 200 though. :P

Well I didn't think a vid card could screw with the sound, until I was using Win95 and learned that awful blips and squeekies were cased by locking the PCI bus or something, and had to do with the vid card. I've had my ATI for about 6 months, and I changed some settings on it (not in the bios, through the control panel), and now I get cracking sounds all the time, and the computer gets worse and locks up for a few seconds whenever I minimize anything. It could be my SB Audigy though, I've heard they don't like Win2K, and I had to change some system settings when I upgraded to Win2K

Interesting thing to note. If nothing else fixes the problem, I might consider getting a new video card. Don't know if I want to mess around with the video card settings now. :P

Yeah I remember the old MPT help file, talking about distortion when the pattern scrolled, and it said to unlock the PCI bus or something. I never had that option, so I just put up with it until I got a good soundcard.

When I installed the latest version of ATI Catalyst (with a newly acquired Radeon 9550), Windows started refusing to boot up. After a while I found that virtually the entire System32 folder had become corrupted during the install, and had to repair from the Windows XP disc.

And after I'd repaired it, I tried installing it again and the same thing happened. Has this happened to anyone else?

Oh, and my desktop. http://wired.st-and.ac.uk/~wong/images/desktop.jpg

I don't have two monitors yet, but it's something that I aspire to.

Not quite the same thing, but I tried installing the latest catalyst control panel from the ATI site not long ago, and on startup it said something along the lines of there being an error in cli.exe, and that it had to close, so I just went back to the old drivers included with the card.

hmm, i used to have a geforce2 and an audigy2, and i would get weird interference sounds when i would move the mouse, minimize/maximize programs, and some other things (sounded like a very quiet hum or high pitched whine).

never did figure out what caused it, but the gfx card started developing other problems (graphic glitches), and eventually xp just refused to boot with it (would blue screen, and i couldnt even reinstall).

The bug was about not having MPT skinned using the default windows skinning engine. After a while I noticed that it was due to the fact that I downloaded an earlier beta instead of the latest. (on that download page, the top link wasn't updated with the latest download)

About the Polyphase vs XMMS... XMMS is the one you can configure, but polyphase allowes more taps (I believe 8 instead of 4, or 16 instead of 8)

But as earlier mentioned, the one that sounds best to you is the one you need. ;)

2 Snu
I experienced the same interference sounds while moving the mouse.
Try muting the CD-connection in the system audio-mixer.
This is because the cable between the cd-unit and the soundcard has connected both sides of the zero-signal,
while the main ground-connection already is there via the bus of the soundcard. A ground-loop.

i dont remember if i even had the cd audio cable connected... (i never listen to cds on the comp, just rip them).  anyway, that vid card is long gone and i have a much better one now.
good to know if i ever have issues again, thanks.

I suppose I'm a teetotaller too. This boring thing was part of my after-boot desktop :

Just a blue background with two buttons. The Bin-icon is just there to quickly wipe buttons left on the desktop after a setup.

My real desktop is the custom build bar of TC to start with.

But I'm inspired By LPChip so I added a background to the after-boot desktop :

A digital terrain made by my daughter Ellis.

Avant Browser is the old brower I used when I made that screenshot. Its one of those IE shell browsers. Using the IE core to display the page, but the rest is by Avant browser. This makes it more secure and faster, and adds lots of options.

Nowadays, I use Opera though.

lol -- you wouldn't believe the angst that caused when we decided to try migrating an existing Windows installation to VirtualBox. :/ For everyone else's reference, if you do it, it's pretty much a one way trip, even if you keep Windows on a separate partition.

The Windows installation you see on my desktop, though, is a nice clean install, so that we can have a 'clean room' testbed for stuff. :)
