Title: Reminder - Free Song Hosting at MODPlug Central
Post by: MisterX on October 22, 2006, 20:35:49
Just a reminder that the MODPlug Central Downloads area accepts uploads - you can upload your file to MPC for free hosting and song exposure.

This forum provides an excellent means of obtaining feedback for your song, while the downloads area provides exposure to a wide variety of listeners.

I would suggest uploading the file to the downloads area, and then posting an announcement in this forum.

Thanks to everyone who continues to make MPC one of the best Free Music Resources on the web!

Thanks for adding the OGG-format there.
As a test I uploaded an OGG-file, but after finishing I got an errormessage about some version-data missing.
So it's a bit unclear whether things are optional or not in the form.
And I didn' understand most of the licence-options. Samples ? Attribution ?

I'll try to remove the version-number-required part of that code.

The licenses are mostly from CreativeCommons.org, and you can get the descriptions of them from the site itself.  I figured if you know CC.org licensing and wanted to use them, they are there to use.

I will check this at CC.

Meanwhile during this first test, I'm pretty sure the upload of the file to the MPC server succeeded anyway.
So my file will be somewhere already, although not in the list on the page.

So if I upload a file, will I be able to remove it if I wish later on?

At this time, you cannot automatically remove a file, but the file can be removed by contacting me either via e-mail or PM.  I know it is not a perfect system, and I am planning on improving it when I have a chance.

For the time being, I wanted to provide a way to host songs and to make the older songs that I still had available.

I wanted to add a file to the MOD format section, but it went wrong.
I got the message :
Invalid file type.
'zip', 'rar', 'ace', 'tar', 'gzip', 'gif', 'GIF', 'png', 'bmp', 'jpg', 'JPG', 'xm', 'XM', 'it', 'IT', 'mp3', 'MP3', 'ogg', 'OGG'

Apart from this, it was a hell to fill in the form, because it's not clear at all which fields has to be filled in or not.
It took me six sessions filling in things, to get to the point where the actual upload format was refused.
Title: Upload .tun files too!
Post by: Harbinger on June 19, 2009, 22:25:09
I've been given admin rights to the upload section at ModPlug's UL/DL site, so i will make it a habit of checking these whenever i'm online (unfortunately that's only 2-3 days a week! :? ) MisterX is also very busy so he's not in the habit of checking for upload approvals. Drop him a reminder PM if you don't see your upload after a day or two.

You can also upload tuning files (.tun) to this site -- just file them under the MISC category.

I haven't seen my upload for a while. Will it be approved?

Thanks in advance,

Do note that ModPlug Download Central will come back, but all I've gotten is a backup from the 2000-2001 era, I don't have the newer files.

I've asked him a few times over the past years, and each time, I got the same backup of 2001. When did he told you he has them?

Okay, thats later than he told me, which was more than a month ago. :)

Lets cross our fingers and hope he does have some backups. :)

As soon as the read-only part of the new download script is finished. I'd say 80-90% of that are done, however university has started again, so I have less time than in the previous weeks for coding. I can give no exact dates, but anything until the end of the year is possible.

Theoretically it would be possible, but at the same time impractical since I would have to upload the files again for the new system (the file contents have slightly changed, since all files have been recompressed). Unless you really don't want to host the files anymore I wouldn't do it, it would just result in two moves in short time, of which one would be unnecessary.

Since you have the ability to host them on the modplug site I think that is what should be done.

I haven't spent much time working on the song download central as I'm fairly busy doing other things as well.  Some features that are still missing are crucial to get the site working, though, so I won't put it online until these issues are resolved. Sadly, web coding is not as addictive as tracker development, though. ;)
Title: perhaps an amazon solution?
Post by: unperfect on November 08, 2011, 09:14:17
Because many years ago I used your fantastic service to amass a tracked music collection that has since been dormant on a no longer used XPp box, and because your music search facility is now existentially challenged I have two suggestions that might apply to your situation based on what little there is to glean from this thread:

Consider creating an Amazon (S3|EC2AWS|etc) AMI and allow others to replicate it to their own storage/instance.  This would only cost you for exceptionally large AMIs, but ZERO for other people to replicate it to their respective accounts.

However this is my best understanding: speculation and not experience.

I only use Amazon S3, and Amazon Cloud Drive -- five gigs EACH free [assumes USA]

I had been looking for a way to use Amazon DevPay for selling the 'cost' of bandwidth for S3 downloads.  I have given up.

--

Alternatively, Dr3am H*st has a storage service that I am much much more confident will suit you.  Create an archive of all the files (with respective directory structure), upload the archive to Dr3am H*st's "Files F0r3v3r" service, uploading costs you very little, each person pays one fee once to download from Dr3am H*st 'forever'.  This is NOT a scurrilous 'free' file hosting company, but a reputable web hosting company.  Company name- and service name munged as this is not an ad for them but a suggestion for you

Thanks for all the mod fish

It's not challenged. The services just have to be brought back one after another, and hosting a new song sharing site will be no problem at all.
Mind you, for archiving other people's music, I'd rather recommend using f.e. ModArchive (http://modarchive.org/) - the focus on ModPlug Song Central will stay on people's own songs.

Also, Amercian hosters are relatively expensive compared what I can get here in most cases.

I'd be happy to point the download link on the main site to wherever the downloads will be located.

Which is a good reason why the archive should be moved to your server.

Adding new music is a different issue from hosting the legacy music which only requires a few folders with the proper permissions set.

Why is it limited to 256 kilobytes? Most modules in IT at about 1 minute are at about 1 megabyte!
Title: Re: Reminder - Free Song Hosting at MODPlug Central
Post by: Saga Musix on September 15, 2014, 22:56:48
This topic is not about forum attachments, but anyway - the limit on the forum attachments is actually so low to discourage people from abusing the forum as a file hosting service. Attachments may be used as a last resort for posting e.g. screenshots or crash dumps when asking a question or reporting a bug.
We don't currently have a module hosting service and it will probably not come back (for legal and other reasons), but there are plenty of good alternatives out there these days.

But it could be fine if the limit was raised to 512kb for attachments.

Even if the limit was 100kb, it coudn't stop me from posting some of my new crafted tracks and remakes :D. Eventhoe i don't really mind the current attachment size limit.

There is no need for the original intent of the attachments to increase the size limit.

To be quite honest (and after posting exactly this in his thread), after listening to his tunes, they are exactly the kind of material that ModArchive quality control rejects to protect newbies from themselves - remember that ModArchive is a permanent archive and we won't remove tunes from there because you don't like them anymore - and "first try" stuff is exactly the kind of music you will generally be embarassed of five years later.

Good point. :)

Actually, it depends on the among of data (samples/intruments, pattern commands/lengh) used in the module.
Most modules (even IT) are quite small (around half an megabyte in most cases).

Well, ignoring the fact that MPC downloads are no more: No, you cannot simply assume that the music posted here is royalty-free. You will have to ask each author separately if you can use their tune(s).
