80s Synths?

I'm looking for some 80s synths samples or free VSTis. They should include this... well... 80s feeling... I'd also appreciate some synth like those that are often used in Future Synthpop / EBM music. You know them for sure, this "strong" synth sound...

hmm, i think you maybe mean fm synth stuff? like the DX7, it's all over the 80s, especially EBM/industrial/synthpop styles. there's the native instruments FM7 VSTi which is a clone of this but it's a bit pricy, certainly not free! there's probably some sort of decent FM synth for free but i can't think of any offhand, i know there are a lot of not so decent ones or ones with only a couple of patches/presets so watch out! there's one huge advantage of the fm7 that  makes it worth almost as much as they charge which is that you can load in DX7 sysex files and get access to all the classic 80s presets, in fact i think fm7 comes with them. fm synthesis is too damned hard for most people so almost everything is suspiciously close to a preset off one of yamahas FM synths.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_DX7 has a bunch of info, i'm pretty sure it's the sound you mean but reading the list of artists there should make that clear. :D

it's quite possible that the dx7 has some of the patches i want. just to make my imagination clear, i've uploaded some snippets of 2 tunes by Apoptygma Berzerk which show pretty much what kind of synth samples i want :)

EDIT: oh, and here's a little preview of what i'm working on :) (link removed)

I'd say the snippet sounds more early-90's than 80's... The FM7 is a good remake of the Yamaha DX7, you can also try Korg's Analog and Digital collections which are pretty nice. For the technoey feel you can also get Superwave P8 which is free - http://home.btconnect.com/christopherg/main.htm

Well, those EBM tunes are of course more 90s, but they lead into the right direction of the sound I have in my mind... i'll check out the P8 (i already downloaded it a while ago, but I've actually never looked into it O_o).

It's pre-FM, but I made some samples with my analog synth :

I hardly use VST, but this P8 looks impressive. Thanks Pesho, I will add it to my list.

Of course plugins are capable of 'simulating' some FM or analog source, but a real sample from a DX7 is different of course.

One can find the VST version of the EMS Synthi A here, but it's quite pricy..

I will check my archive, I also have some Moog and ARP 2600 material.

I've already a quite huge collection of analogue synth sounds, but thanks anway, they completed my collection even more :)

Oxe is a free FM synth which is both VSTi and standalone..
you can download it from "http://www.oxesoft.com/"

I only hear one fm based sound in the mp3 and that is in the second example, so for that perticular sound you can indeed use something like the dx7 or a software equivalent
However for the other sounds i'd suggest not using a fm synth but rather a VA like the synth1 vsti. (if you prefer something free)
The key is in into programming the sounds and the sequencing of the right notes/chords not the synth it selve.

zynaddsubfx does some fm synth.

Thanks for the link! This is a nice free toy to play with that looks very promising.
